Posture

I don't always have the best posture I tend to slouch when I'm sitting in anything which doesn't have a back (such as a stool) to it. Also sometimes when I'm standing or walking but it really depends on what I'm wearing. I find that when I wear something beautiful, especially when wearing dresses, my posture is much better. Maybe I'm just more aware of the garments I'm wearing? And I do think that posture is related to self-esteem and self awareness. Those who have fantastic posture, women like Audrey Hepburn (who stands out in my mind), I think tend to feel quite happy with themselves. So I'm trying to not slouch so much and stand tall and beautiful!

I took modern dance growing up and when I was younger my dance teacher told us about this thing called the "invisible string" which makes you stand very straight and dance that way too. Only later did I realize it was another word for posture. But she "gave" us our "invisible string" the first day of dance class. It was so exciting because we really believed in it and thought it existed (we were five years old at the time). But this is something I've never forgotten and whenever I do catch myself slouching I am reminded to keep my invisible string up. ^_^

In 2007 I got injured and had to sit in a wheelchair for a few months and then use crutches for 6 months. It really killed my positure, which used to be pretty good after years of dancing and horseback-riding. Of course I didn´t really notice since it came to me naturally, but a few years ago I started to get serious neckpains every day and migraines at least once a week. I talked about it with my physiotherapist and she pointed out that it could be because of my positure. So she put my body in the right positions and after standing there for just 5 seconds I got so dizzy and my face turned white so I had to sit down immediately. My position was so bad that my body got so confused when it was right. Now I´ve finally started to get the good positure naturally again, all the neckpains are gone and I rarely even get headaches anymore :) I had to work really hard on it. In the beginning I could just sit still in a good positure for 5 minutes and got exhausted.

SomethingElse's tips was very useful, I'm going to start following them religiously from now on!

What really messes up my posture is that I don't have a chair in my bedroom. Sounds silly but whenever I'm on my notebook, reading or whatsoever, I find myself sitting improperly on my bed. Reading this thread really made me change my way of sitting (now I find myself sitting on the floor with my back straight against the wall, ha). Totally considering buying a comfortable chair to work in my "new" posture.
