Posture

Walking with a book on your head

I'm thinking of doing this.....anyone ever tried it before? DOes it really make more aware of your posure? Is it because it's impossible to balance the book on your head if you slouch? or is to to make you walk 'smoother' without bouncing and wobbling too much?

I trid it years and years ago - if I remember correctly it helped me become more aware of my shoulders/neck placement. Try to extend your neck and lower your shoulders so that you dont get too stiff in the neck area. It will also help you to become more aware of your abdominal strength. But basically relax as you do it.

^ So according to that we should apparently all lean back when we type.

If we are not naturally farsighted in the first place, maybe listening to reggae would help.

^ I think she is only incorrect if you spend your entire workday (and maybe a few hours of your playtime?) with your rump on the seat. I got the impression that it's tough on the spine if you sit straight and sit, and sit, and sit, and sit, but only then. Grandma lived in the day where people went outside/walked around sometimes and she assumes we do too, lol!!

Anyway I noticed that just because I stand up, I don't straighten up. And the report said nothing about it being good to walk around hunching. So I am not discounting grandma. I might try the reggae thing though. Does TFS come in gigantic font size? lol!!

WHat the? so when your grandmother tells you to "sit up straight, don't slouch!" she's lying? No! I wont believe it!:p

She wasn't lying, she was just mistaken. Just like her grandmother was mistaken when she told her that the earth was flat. Through science we learn new things that make things we used to believe, incorrect. ;)

posture - rounded shoulders

Hi, I dont know if this should be here, but it seems like the best place

I have this problem. I'm not a big person, about a size 10-12 (UK). I've never been photogenic or anything, but after much work I'm beginning to like what I see and think I'm passable at least! :p

But the one thing that bothers me is that whenever I see myself in pictures or catch myself in a mirror or shop window, I notice that my shoulders seem very rounded and sloping. This in turn makes my arms look bigger at the top. It gives the impression that I'm bigger than I am and clothes dont look so good. I doubt it looks like I have much confidence either, and although I'm not super confident, I dont think it does me justice.

Is this a genetic thing - just my body shape, or is it something I could fix do you think? I'd like to look a little more angular!

I started a simmilar thread some time ago...and It didn´t convey too many responses...
I am kinda obsessed about posture myself. Yoga helped me really a lot because bad posture is sometimes the result of poor back and abdominal muscles. You learn lots of exercises that require you to elongate your back...

Also I try to remember myself all the time to stand straigth!
I stand next to a wall with the back to my head my shoulders and my buttocks touching the wall...and I start from there.
When I m sitting I try not to slouch and to keep my back straight without letting all the weight rest on the back of the seat. I try almost not to touch the back of the seat.

Also I swing my hair, to see if it moves on my back. If it touches too much my back, it´s because I´m hunching over.

Those tricks are kinda silly but I use them as reminders to keep a good posture.

I would recommend Pilates to anyone concerned about posture. I never thought I slouched until I started doing Pilates. Even after my first session, I was more aware of my body and posture.

I recommend ballet!!!People have come to me an ask me if I was a dancer in the most crazy places like in the metro or a bus stop because of the good posture.

I would like to try ballet even if I´m quite grown up!
I´ve been told about a class for "grown ups" and I´m definitely gonna try it. I love ballet dancers posture, so elegant and a definite airiness.

I think it all goes back to stregthening the muscles on your back, because slouching is just the result of lack of the strength to carry your own weight.

I love also the way ballet dancers carry their heads... so regal...

I think there is something special about working and training in front of a mirror. You learn to know yourself and how to change and align your posture. A lot of people don´t own a big mirror so they only see their posture and the image they project in the windows on the street or in photographs.

A big mirror is a great thing, you learn a lot when you really see yourself!

I had a great gym teacher when my body was growing fast at 14 - 16 years old. She taught me a few lifelong lessons on posture.

Stretch for three minutes when you wake up in the morning, every morning.

Make every movement count - be graceful and enjoy moving.

Imagine you are being pulled by a little string from the top of your head straight up as you walk, stand and sit. Breathe.

Posture is as much your stature as the expression on your face. Look up.

There were a bunch more, all derived from hatha yoga. More than anything, her point was to make good posture a habit. Head up, shoulders back, and a good, strong core with great flexibility.

Even sitting here on tFS makes me slouch. Boo! ^But I think SomethingElse's advice is great!

ditto the ballet suggestion! I used to do ballet (an I just started up recently) and my friends and family sometimes comment on my good posture.

I have horrible posture. I think it's because my whole life people have commented on how tall I was so I felt really insecure about it and slouched a lot. Now I always slouch still and I'm going to try to eradicate that problem. I'm going to try some of the tips in this thread!

Yea, I have horrible posture also. I dont know how to correct this problem....maybe I should start doing yoga or something

My posture is the worst! I hate it so much, I'm always trying to sit, stand, walk properly but I find it so hard now. I used to go to yoga and pilates because I heard they're good for your back but tbh I'm pretty sure I was doing something wrong because my sister would come out feeling amazing and refreshed and said she felt a difference after our first few classes and I would feel the exact same as I did before:doh:

I have a hard time with my posture when I'm wearing flat shoes  when wearing heels I automatically become more aware of my movements, including my posture, but when I pass by a mirror wearing flats I'm always mortified by how I tend to fold in half when I'm not paying attention
