Posture

A few milimetres... I think that inch would take a lot of work. The prob with Alexander Technique is that it is nothing like Yoga because you always need a teacher and it is quite expensive

I thought I could dig up this thread, to see if somebody can add something, like websites or blog where we can learn something without having to pay for Alexander, yoga, pilates, etc.
I think those techniques are great and I use some of them, but maybe somebody can feed in some tips for everybody to use.
It would be nice to learn some of the tips models learn to keep that sultry and elongated posture they ALL seem to have...

I have great posture. Unfortunately a friend of mine doesn't and I can't figure out why! Maybe her bone structure is a little off? She's slim but I don't think she works out so maybe her muscle tone is not that great? She also walks a little weird.

oh god, i have awful posture, and the thing is, it still looks like i have bad posture when im standing straight! and if some of you have a lil bump half way down your spine, which makes it look like your stooped over, my uncle says that shows the spine has real flexibility, and its damn nigh impossible to have a back injury..hes an orthopedic surgeon, but maybe he said that just to be nice?...

Dance has always helped me mantain a good posture. Now whenever I am slumping or my posture is out of whack even for a little while it just kills my back.

same here. if i slouch my back starts to hurt. i took ballet three times a week for 10 years and it helped i started at age 4

For some reason, I don't have that great of posture. I have this habit of leaning either forward or back. I blame it on the boobs, lol.

hi!!
one word- pilates!
it focuses on building your core muscels in your stomach and back..It's a great workout and it helps to improve your everyday posture!!
(i love it ) ;)!!

cheers/ good luck..

My issue with posture is my neck! This will sound strange, but my neck is quite long and so it's takes an effort for me to hold it straight, what with my heavy head on top of it. Don't worry, I'm not freakish looking (I don't think), and when I hold it up nice and straight, a long neck is quite elegant looking. But I still haven't gotten it into a permanent habit, since it takes that extra effort for me  When I do remember to lift my head up higher though, it's as if the rest of the back and my body does too. So maybe that's a good tip to start off with - lift your head!!
It's funny, my sister and I are the same height, but her shoulders are higher than mine. The only reason why I'm as tall as she is, is because of the extra cm. from my neck!

Anyone else have this wierd situation?

(<- maybe that's why I liked my avatar haha)

I have terrible posture as well, but I also have scoliosis, so I've got a bit of an excuse. I've found physical therapy really helpful, though. Flexability is a big part of it--I couldn't even touch my toes before. So stretching the legs is really important, especially hamstrings and hip flexors.

Also, most people sorta stick their butts out too much when they stand, which you're not really supposed to do. This can also be a result of inflexability in the legs.

Yoga can help, but seeing a phys. therapist was the main thing that worked for me...although I don't really know if you can go to one unless you have a real medical problem?

After having a baby/gaining too much weight while pregnant/ carrying a newborn all the time, my posture was awful. I tried yoga and still couldn't improve my rounded shoulders. I saw a chiropractor and after a few adjustments, in combination with weight loss and continuing yoga practice I've seen improvement. Perhaps straightening out your bones first will put the muscles in the right place. Anyways it helped me .....

I have good posture when walking but for some reason when I'm standing still or sitting I naturally tend to slouch. It's a really hard habit to break.

i got a great posture from 10 years of swimming, horseback-riding and pilates. if you have access try horseback-riding. it really helps to learn how to keep your posture straight all the time, even when you are not riding

Another yoga/pilates move is to sit on the floor - legs out in front of you (or you can do it at the computer, or in front of a mirror to check your posture), breathe in and raise your shoulders to your ears (try not to hunch). Exhale and lower your shoulders , bringing the back into line and the shoulder blades together. Its important thou not to force your shoulders into your back. The old maxim of "No pain no gain" is just that - an old maxim. You dont need to force this your body will naturally adjust. If it doesn't see a chiropractor and check if there is anything out of alignment

Pilates changed my whole body!!! It toned it, gave it more strength and flexibility, and improved posture. Here is a word: wanna be taller for a about an inch? Practice good posture!!! After doing pilates and having a good posture, I realized I am actually 1 inch taller than what I thought I was. Again, don't think that you only need to have good posture when you wear heels. Most people have pretty good posture in heels, until they slip in their slippers or sneakers and....:(

I have horrible posture now, but when I was younger I had perfect posture. When I quit dance, however, my stomach muscles went goodbye and now I'm really struggling to get it back.

I used to have horrendous posture, but now that I'm a little older (in high school...not old, just older!) I realize how it can really change your look/how people look at you.

One time when I was a competitive figure skater my team had to take pictures for a competition roster, and the coach was yelling at me to sit up straight, and I pushed my shoulders back, held my head up, but it still looked like I didn't have good posture? It's like my neck is shaped so it always looks like that or something I hate it!

Maybe when that pilates studio opens that'd help......

I've got a long neck too! Once I was at Coffee Bean relaxing in a chair and I leaned my head against the wall. My friend told me to quit doing that because from the angle she was at, my head apparently looked "detached" from the rest of my body because of my long neck. As in people with normal length necks would net have been able to reach their heads to the wall!
:shock::blink::unsure::doh:

i have horrible posture. I know that i should straighten my back when I am standing and such, but i always feel like Im sticking out my chest and my butt when I do so i slouch :/

Well, one way I found with posture is actually the bone stucture you are born with, yesterday me and my dad was jus ttalking about it. He mentioned, if you are tall, you back has to be very straight, and he said it's something people are born with...
