Prince Carl Philip And Princess Sofia Of Sweden Announce Baby Boy’s Name

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden revealed the name of their baby son — Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil. According to Swedish royal tradition, Carl Philip's father, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced his grandson's name and title at a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The baby prince is the duke of Söderland.
Sofia and Carl Philip left Danderyd hospital in the north of Stockholm Wednesday, where the 31-year-old princess gave birth to the couple’s first child on Tuesday, and returned home to Drottningholm Palace. The Royal Palace of Sweden released a photograph of the new parents along with the baby, who was seen sleeping in the car seat.
The baby boy was born at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, local time, and weighed about 7.9 pounds. Carl Philip told reporters in a press conference that both the mother and son were in “good health.” He said he was by his wife's side during their son’s birth and also cut the umbilical cord.
Meanwhile, members of the royal family have congratulated the new parents. King Carl and his wife, Queen Silvia, wished their son and his wife “peace and quiet” with their son. Crown Princess Victoria said she “rejoiced” with the couple, while Princess Madeleine expressed her “great pleasure to welcome a new family member.”
A statement by the palace said that all the three were doing well and were looking forward to spending time together.
A traditional Te Deum thanksgiving church service is expected to be held soon.
Sofia’s parents, Marie and Erik Hellqvist, said they would offer their help and support as grandparents, adding they felt proud and happy to welcome their “long-awaited grandson.”
Carl Philip and Sofia announced in October that they were expecting their first child. The prince and his longtime sweetheart got married in a lavish wedding in June. The royals had chosen to keep the sex of their baby a surprise.
