ai never walked for versace!!! what's versace smoking? ai is amazing!

wasn't there some prada asian controversy too, about how prada doesn't use asian girls? i've seen hye in their shows, so i don't really believe it, but that's just what i've heard some people say

has prada ever used ai tominaga?
Nope. I believe Hye is the only asian or black model to walk for Prada since Naomi back in the 90's.

cnn looked at prada runway footage and found that they haven't had a woman of color on their runway in six years...personally i think that is ridiculous. it's almost like they're saying "these women shouldn't be wearing prada; we aren't targeting them."

and i have to disagree with you princeofcats; there are many other white european designers using women of color (black, indian, asian) on their runways. i don't think at this stage using women of color in your show is making a point...maybe 10 years ago. now just about every runway show has at least one woman of color, usually liya, ujjwala, naomi or alek wek.

I definitely agree.

Well speaking of Asian, I was soooo surprised Donatella casted Hye Park this past season and she casted Bruna Tenorio (she's Brazilian but I think she has some asian genes). I think she is trying to change the look of the company though (to my opinion I would do it.)

Now a days I feel its so pathetic to be so racial specific. We really are all the same.

Prada is very selective about their caucasian models, there are popular caucasian models who have never walked Prada. There are less black and less asian models then caucasian ones and there are definitely less black and less asian "top" models then caucasian ones, so maybe it's just that Prada is extremely selective and those few popular "ethnic" models aren't just what Prada wants? Since they have used Naomi in the past and Hye Park maybe it's just more what's right for Prada then it's Prada is only for whites.

Arghhhhh......... This is what everyone thinks
If a show uses white models people will think its racist because there aren't any black models, so if a show does black and white models, they're racist towards asian models, and they're leaving out indian models, then it goes on and on and on and on and on! THEY MIGHT AS WELL FIT THE WHOLE BLOOMING WORLD ON THE RUNWAY.
Do you get it?

how about miu miu signing a chinese actress, zhou xun ad it's model on the last campaign?
can we considered miu miu the same with prada?

^^ good point.
And of course we all know Miucci Prada owns both. (DUH!)

miu miu isn't equal to prada...
although they are becoming more prominent, prada is on another level
about miu miu campaigns using chinese actresses, that was an economic move. that campaign was aimed to increase sales in china, which is a huge market

frankly, i think whoever does prada's casting needs to be fired. i don't know what's going on, but this is my theory. Prada is obviously one of the biggest brands out there. many times, whatever model they use has become very big. sasha is short and very untraditionally looking, and she's huge right now. when anna maria urajevshaya opened prada in fall 06, she snagged a vogue italia cover right away. of course, these, IMO were reasonable choices. but look at what they tried to do this season. they booked suvi koponen exclusively for prada and miumiu. she wasn't a big model, and i doubt that many shows would've used her anyways. it's one thing to exclusively book daria (cavalli and chanel) but it's different to book a no name model who no one even knows or cares about. it seems like prada is just saying "i'm going to see how far my influence goes by testing whether or not i can make some random girl really big". so far, it seems that has failed, fortunately.
on another note, miu miu has booked lindsay lohan for miu miu. lindsay isn't exactly a miu miu girl. in addition, the prada colelction this season was hideous. something is going on with prada right now, and i'm definately not liking it. i think the who race controversy may have been just the result of their messed up executive power displacement.

Baroque, Prada never uses big models. Sasha was an unkown until Prada booked her exclusively, Gemma Ward was unkown before Prada booked, and Luca Gadjus, Elise Crombez, the list goes on. From what you are saying, Prada only books girls that woudlnt be anywhere without them, and it's true, the chances that these girls would have had if they weren't casted by Russell Marsh is slim, but this is what Prada does. When you said they were booking a no name model out of nowhere, this is what Prada does every season for every model that they have made a star. It just happens that this years choice is Suvi Koponen, and she again, is turning into a star, booking 4 campaigns this season.

baroque, you have to understand that all of these things go around in a circle....

russell casts prada show and other magazines
meisel shoots prada campaign and shoots vogue italia
if a girl is booked exclusively on prada, she is generally tipped to be a star, and will most probhably go on to shoot with meisel, and therefore being in vogue italia

when Gemma ward did her first prada show, meisel saw her on the cover of WWD the next day and called russell and said 'who the f*ck is that girl'
he instantly spoke to mrs prada and booked her on the campaign.
then he used her for italien vogue, and a star was born... he also had an exclusive editorial option on her for a LONG time so no other photographer could use her

its also to do with agency relations... in new york, russell only hangs out with a guy from IMG, a guy from Women and a guy from DNA, im not gonna say who, but its business.... its all about business

The example of Asians reacting more favorably to White models is a perfect and very sad example.

that is not exactly the case... it have to do with something rather with how diff. the Asian market want, and how the western society see the Asian market with stereotype and their fantasies of the "exotics"
every time i find a asian model on the catwalk are, they look (naturally or the make up they had on) are simply far too "exotic", to a point even local asian cannot even associate to
and most of the high-end asian model are look too stereotypical for us (its like only in the catwalk u can find ppl who is having small eyes, dark skin, flat nose and many other "Asian feature" all crumbled on their face at once...) and what happen is that those kinda model end up doing job that once and again are "highly oriental" which make white people think that so product are only made for asian (which by all mean they will have no use of it), while the Asians, esp. those who lived in Asia thinks that "it is kinda fancy... but why the heck that suposed to associate with us... like we dont wear read since when... last new year party?!?!?! wait last new year party i wore a hot pink sweater with some jeans of some random brand." as then obviously if the agencies keep scooping those "propotye-Asian" looking girl to be, obviously we wont valued or look up to them when they look like exoticized, "traditional" object rather than a human!!!

Campbell criticises Vogue for lack of black models

Thought this was interesting:
Naomi Campbell: Fashion favours fair skin

Fiery supermodel Naomi Campbell has attacked the fashion industry and glossy magazines for sidelining “black beauty” in favour of fair-skinned models.

Naomi Campbell: People don’t appreciate black beautyThe 37-year-old said even she found it harder to get onto the coveted front cover as editors of magazines like Vogue consistently chose less prominent white models for news stand impact.
And she has vowed to set up her own modelling agency in her beloved Kenya in an attempt to redress the balance.
“Black models are being sidelined by the major modelling agencies,” she told local journalists at a press conference in the beach resort of Malindi, Kenya, where she is on holiday.
“It is a pity that people don’t appreciate black beauty”.
She added: “I even get a raw deal from my own country. For example, I hardly come on the front pages of London’s Vogue magazine.
"Only white models, some of whom are not as prominent as I am, are put on the front pages”.
Campbell, notorious for her temper tantrums and who has earned a lucrative living as one of the world’s most famous black models, was speaking at the luxury hotel owned by former boyfriend Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore, the head of the Renault Formula One team.
A regular visitor to Malindi, she is now expected to fly to Nairobi to scout for talents among modelling agencies.
“I don’t want to quit modelling until I find that black models get equal prominence and recognition by the world media and information instruments” she added.

Model Alek Wek has a successful international careerBorn in London, and a model since she was just 15, Campbell first appeared on the cover of Vogue aged 17 in 1987.
She last made the cover five years ago.
Several African models have done phenomenally well.
These include Alek Wek, from southern Sudan, Waris Dirie from Somalia and Iman, also from Somalia and the supermodel wife of singer David Bowie.
But, even the model agency Storm acknowledged she may have a point.
“There is a growing ethnic diversity, but it’s not happening quite as fast as was predicted,” said Storm director Simon Chambers.
“None the less we do expect the very best black boys and girls in the industry to reach the highest echelons of modelling - like Naomi and Alek have done”.
Miss Campbell, who is with the IMG agency, said she had now begun contacting scouts to help set up an agency that would find and train women to become models.
“I believe there are pretty girls from your lovely country who can grace the international catwalk and the front pages of fashion magazines with proper strategies,” she told the Kenyan press.
A spokesman for Vogue said they had no comment.

I understand her and I think she´s right. There are so many beautiful black women in the model industry, for example Liya Kebede:heart:.I like different types of beauties, but I think black models are actually less favoured than light-skinned ones:cry:.

I think it's a valid criticism, coming from a "fiery supermodel" or not, and the issue needs to be addressed. I saw more black models in prominent covers and ads in the 80's and 90's, I believe.

However, rather than overt racism, I think the reopening of the former Soviet Union and its bloc nations may be part of what has skewed the image toward a more (white) European angle. It's a girl goldmine over there, you know? They have no sense of privilege whatsoever, are generally so grateful for the work and disciplined about it--that they're white is beside the point.

Perhaps modeling agencies need to scout Africa as well as they have Eastern Europe? But how many traditional African families see modeling as a career choice?

All sorts of things to think about here. Let's all misunderstand one another and argue!

well, there are alot of factors. she has a valid point. on the other hand, most covers go to models who are younger. plus, she is so well known she's more than a model, she's a personality/icon. maybe she's just mad because linda had that us vogue cover last year... <G>

maybe it has something to do with the fact that, sadly, the vast majority who read magazines like Vogue (europe or america), Bazaaer, W, L'officiel etc. and can actually afford stuff advertised (which is what counts for advirtisers), are white. People tend to associate themsevles with other people of their ethnicity. It's not about appreciating, it's about being able to associate yourself with the image. I am white and I find Alek Wek beauituful, but do I want to look like her or do I know anyone who looks like her that I can look up to? Not really. I am from Eastern Europe and the first time I saw a black person in real life, I was 12. If these ethnicity has no prominant social or economical position in my society, why should it be feautured on the cover of popular fashion mags?
