I've seen this look at the Valentino Couture show and liked it, its also sported by Eva Green. But is it too much? How can you avoid the drag queen look?

opinions and advice much needed :p

both together?..more scary
but red lips can be sexy same with smokey eyes

eva green pulls it off and premiere etc, you're right, but if i saw her on the street in broad daylight i would think it's tooooooo much.

I think it depends on your face-some faces can take a lot of make-up and just look beautifully dramatic whereas others (me included) end up looking like kiddies who played around in their mother's make-up bag/drag queens.
If you're going to attempt this look keep the smoky eye grey and not too shimmery. Also, don't extend it too much up and around the eye, more subtly smoky than black eye is you catch my drift? And with the red lips, don't get one that's too bright (normally orange toned ones). Look for a richer red, it will be more sophisticated.

drag queen:ninja:

except on eva. i guess it would work if you were going for a gothic, vamp look. it would be very costumey though

Sexy! Both not both at the same time! If you do a red lip or smoky eye, you have to make sure the rest of your make up is natural (plain). I find it looks better when your outfit is not complicated either.

.. plus a dash of blue eyeshadow? :woot:
drag queen indeed.

..it can look good when done by professional hands though.

The makeup at Valentino was just ghastly. The girls all looked like 13 year olds that got carried away with Mom's makeup kit. But the godawful lighting doesn't help either; it looks like they did the show in some fluorescent lit warehouse imo.

But Eva Green sure can carry this look! I think it's because she just goes all out - dramatic dress, glamour hair, and heavy makeup that's obviously packed with pigment. It's a package deal. Plus, it looks like she travels with her own personal lighting director!:p^_^

You're all so pessimistic.

I also don't like the Valentino look, but it is a bad example. I think they just did everything too much.

I think it depends on your definition of smoky eyes. If you do it lightly, and red lips don't look out of place for you, then it is okay. I frankly do this myself, because without a somewhat smoky eye, I look naked. And without some color on my lips, I look ghostly. So sometimes I wear them together. I guess these things don't look odd on some people. But it all depends.

Sugar Rush nailed it. I used to wear the look a lot and maybe it was a tad too much for everyday life but wasn't scary. Don't over do the eyes and find a deep red. My fav is Chanel Lune Rousse, suits pale skins very well.

Like someone said, i think it depends if you over do it or not.

If it´s a subtle smokey eye, i really like it. Or really really dark for a night look and instead of a red matte lipstick, something red but less flashy, or something a bit glossy kind of transparent.

When it's done wrong it looks scary, when it's done right it looks sexy.
I liked Valentino's look in this seasons RTW, but I think it went a bit OTT for the couture ~ the eyes were very dark and the lips were quite deep in colour, there was also generous use of white eyeliner which I think made it look a bit too much..

It's a matter of what colours you use and very carefully balancing eye / lip tones; a very strong eye and a very strong lip makes everything clash a bit too much imo so to achieve this kind of look I go for false eyelashes (not the drag queen kind!) and very subltle brown lids, and a pillarbox red lip. The skin I feel is what brings this look together - as spotted in Valentino & Gucci RTW this winter, the skin is absolutely immaculate, so I'd say go for as flawless a coverage as you can. Brows also need to be well-groomed, not neccesarily thick, but just neat. :flower:

light smudged smokey eyes plus the perfect right red lipstick will work

panda smokey eyes with sheer red lipgloss are fine

panda smokey eyes with the wrong shade of red = disaster

I've been thinking this over and I figured that it wasn't such a bad idea if the smokey eye is slightly done with brown instead of black and the red lips are very dark.. like toning the idea all the way down until it's quite subtle and making it less 'glam' and more late 90s-inspired.. a bit Chloe F/W 07 -_-.

I really don´t like that Prada makeup....The girls look awful!!!

^^^
I have to agree... The makeup looks sort of ghastly.

I do love smokey eyes... and red lips. But I guess both at the same time is a little much unless it's super subtle (one or the other). Both are just such powerful looks individually that both together can be way too much look.

kind of OT, but i actually love the lips @ Prada... theyre not glossy or shiny.. they look lovely and stained, and i like how the lips are still visible..

anyways, i think it depends on the degree of the eye and lip, not too much for either. i think maybe for the red lips, a stain would be best (like the Prada) and for eyes, something toned down a bit.

Lavin did a good job with this, i think.

ahh definitely. the Lanvin makeup is very spot on for this.. some very dark lips and lighter/brown eyes seem to be the trick.

beauty's definitely in the eyes of the beholder I guess, the prada look is one of my all-time favorites.. but then I've always loved that ''ghastly'' look to some degree.

its hard to point out what it takes to look good with this look. its agressive having very dramatic eyes and lips at the same time, not a fan but at the same time, i have a thing for it
