Rihanna

I think her image-makers have taken Rihanna too far, both with the fashion and her music. I mean on this album, Rude Boy was the only decent song; everything else was too production driven and just well.. not very good. She's not the calibre of artist they're trying to make her be. At least, I'm not buying it.

I loved seeing her cut her hair and transform, and Reloaded was a great album. But since the arrival of Gaga and this trend for very individual, quirky singers everyone is trying to outdo each other with the shock fashion and stage shows. Beyonce can spar with Gaga when it comes to that because she's a big character with powerful stage presence. Rihanna et al simply aren't in the same ball park.. hence dial it back. Go back to doing your thing, you were good.

I SOOO agree with this statement. it does feel like these new generation of pop stars are just trying to one up each other for shock value, but none of them have reached the peaks of their careers for them the world to really really care. I know Rihanna's album has sold decent numbers for this day and age in the music industry where it is harder to sell these kinds of numbers. BUT you have to notice that she is not selling nearly as much as she used to or potentially could. I definitely think she needs to scale it back a little bit, keep the edge, but not so over-the-top with it.

They airbrushed her body too much...

But maybe this IS her thing. Rihanna is young and maybe the "sweet island girl" image she had during "pon de Replay" was fabricated, sort of thrust upon her. I think she has said a few times in interviews that the long hair she had just wasn't her style AT ALL. Being a "Teeny bopper pop star" might never have been her thing...

I think the girl always had edge.

As for this copying thing. I think it's just ANOTHER way to compare female artists:rolleyes: Who cares anyway? We don't see Jay Z and T.I being compared or Timberlake and whoever..

That's a good point well made, honeyisle. Lately I have loved pretty much every look she's worn, it seems a lot better put together and less straight-off-the-catwalk as it was a year-or-so ago.

Also agree about your point about comparisons. Look back through history and I'm sure you can draw comparisons with artists from today with artists from the past.

ri is nothing like beyonce. i dont think beyonce is edgy at all but her stage presence is stronger than ri's imo. as far as copying styles, i dont think so. EVERYONE, including celebrities, are INSPIRED by someone, or something, when it comes to their personal style.

Pon de Replay was an age ago and I wasn't referring to that era or saying she should go back to that. You must have missed the bit where I said I liked seeing her cut her hair and transform.... I think she hit it right music/fashion-wise towards the end of the Reloaded album days. Now she's gone too far and it doesn't suit her. Some of these latest photos of her performances make me cringe.

I wonder would Grace Jones call Inspiration or Copying..?
Grace said Lady Gaga was copying her...so she would probably say the same about Rihanna...I doubt she would call it an inspiration..

I totally never implied that you did say that. I was just thinking that maybe the Rihanna we see now is the real her and not the image she had when she first came out:flower:

I will agree with you however that some of her concert looks are horrendous.

^ I personally think it's a matter of opinion. I like this Rihanna better.

Rihanna arrives in Istanbul ahead of her first show in Turkey, June 3, 2010
