I think her image-makers have taken Rihanna too far, both with the fashion and her music. I mean on this album, Rude Boy was the only decent song; everything else was too production driven and just well.. not very good. She's not the calibre of artist they're trying to make her be. At least, I'm not buying it.
I loved seeing her cut her hair and transform, and Reloaded was a great album. But since the arrival of Gaga and this trend for very individual, quirky singers everyone is trying to outdo each other with the shock fashion and stage shows. Beyonce can spar with Gaga when it comes to that because she's a big character with powerful stage presence. Rihanna et al simply aren't in the same ball park.. hence dial it back. Go back to doing your thing, you were good.
I SOOO agree with this statement. it does feel like these new generation of pop stars are just trying to one up each other for shock value, but none of them have reached the peaks of their careers for them the world to really really care. I know Rihanna's album has sold decent numbers for this day and age in the music industry where it is harder to sell these kinds of numbers. BUT you have to notice that she is not selling nearly as much as she used to or potentially could. I definitely think she needs to scale it back a little bit, keep the edge, but not so over-the-top with it.

Who cares anyway? We don't see Jay Z and T.I being compared or Timberlake and whoever..
