RIP Patrick Demarchelier - 1943-2022

Oh my, how devastating. Although he hasn't been active for several years now, his contribution to fashion magazines, and American Vogue above all, are and will remain to be greatly missed. He may not have been a good man, but his photography is timeless and I will always have respect for his work. May he rest in peace!

Such a bittersweet news…
May he Rest In Peace. He was a photographer and a legend in fashion. I particularly loved his work in the late 90’s to mid 00’s and his contribution to Vogue Paris. He will always been synonymous with Carlyne Cerf and US Vogue in some ways…

There’s something so uncomfortable about this news, his absence from the fashion scene since 2018 and the reactions and post on social media will provoke in the next few days….Considering that there are two legendary photographers who have a kind of « embargo » over them right now.

Wow, what a legend. He was the first fashion photographer I knew by name, way back when.

may he Rest in Peace

I remember meeting him outside Grand Palais after Chanel F/W 2017 fashion show. He was walking alone from the exit gate with both hands in his pocket and no one noticed him. Not by any of the bystanders or photographers who were screaming when Bella and Gigi walked out. I called out his name and asked for a photo of him and he obliged. He was polite. RIP Patrick.

Incredibly sad to hear of Demarchelier's passing, a truly remarkable talent who gave us endless amounts of pleasure via his photography. Many of his photographs and magazine covers are some of my most favourite - ever. A true master!

Patrick’s passing is another slap in the face of fashion.

This current era where the Greats are passing like another wasted year gone by— or simply being cancelled, wiped out of existence for past trespasses and never given a second chance, it’s all too much to take at times. Such Greats are being blatantly replaced by such lessers (whom all wouldn’t even be hired to take product shots for a catalogue 10 years ago if most, if not all aren’t coasting by the representation quota). Even if someone like Patrick may have been hired because of wealth or nepotism (I have no idea), he still is someone who eventually came into his own, with great creative talent and inspirational, technical skills. Admittedly, I was never a fan of Patrick. However, there’s no denying of his talent. Just like I was never a fan of Karl— but I did appreciate his talent and distinct vision of fashion that remains irreplaceable And that’s what elevated everything they produced, and raised them beyond whatever wealth, nepotism, privilege— or whatever accusations this generation of lessers may attempt to undermine their immense contributions with: Talent, talent, talent and more talent.
