WWD EXCLUSIVE: Saint Laurent to Skip Paris Fashion Week, Set Own Schedule

The French fashion house will not present its collections in any of the preset schedules of 2020 as it adapts to the coronavirus crisis.
By Joelle Diderich on April 27, 2020

PARIS — Saint Laurent has decided to drop out of Paris Fashion Week and set its own pace for showing collections for the duration of the year, as the brand pivots to adapt to the coronavirus crisis.

“Conscious of the current circumstance and its waves of radical change, Saint Laurent has decided to take control of its pace and reshape its schedule,” the brand was set to reveal today.

F.B.: We are looking at how we can create efficiencies in advertising and promotion. We still plan to advertise this year, as it is pivotal to sustain the brand image and positioning. The release of the campaigns will probably align with the arrival of the collections in the stores, and the media chosen will be those that communicate best with local clientele in each market.

Fabulous! They can do that because they are Saint Laurent but for a few smaller brands which count on pfw to have the buyers, editors etc then it would be different.

I have always been supportive of how Alaia handle his business. For me, it was the healthiest way to do the business

By the way, most brands should already do permanent collections, it will change a lot their business and even the way customers approach their brands. The need to change everything every season is just so wrong.

Good news. I think PFW should be cancelled...Even further, September FW should be cancelled. The focus should be on producing the clothes that were presented in February/March. Prefall was shown and the production started before the shutdown and I think those clothes should be in stores until February/March 2021.
Maybe the industry should go back to the exclusives shows like the ones Nicolas did at Balenciaga or even like Tom Ford’s comeback show. There’s no need for influencers from all over the world or celebrities now. The frenzy those people causes is not needed now....
It’s time, for at least a year, for FW to te-become a professional event.

His way only works for him tho... Showing when you want, to who you want cannot really works in the industry so scheduled. We saw Tom Ford struggle with that for the whole entire decade...

I wonder if these changes will be a good thing. Having a fixed calendar for Presentations and shows means that everybody is in the same place at the same time, the pull of the big houses making sure that people are present. If that's gone what will be left for those who don't have that pull? SL, LV etc can decide when they want to show simply because they can be assured that people will be there, even going so far as flying them wherever they want them to be, at any given time. The rest, not so much...I'm very curious how this will all play out.

After their marvelous F/W collection this is upsetting news for me but given the global epidemic it’s absolutely reasonable.

Looking forward to seeing this executed through the year!

Dropping out of the fashion week schedule that probably won't happen for 2020. How brave of them.

It's too bad the slow down of the fashion industry is being forced by the pandemic which will cause a loss of jobs, etc.

I'm not optimistic it will lead to creativity taking the lead as long as the suits are in charge.

Also I would love to still have the main shows but also have drops throughout the year similar to how Chanel delivers their collections to retail.

They should just have the models photography themselves from their bathroom with their phone cameras, wearing the collection and contorting themselves awkardly. A little Bird told me it was the "in" thing at the moment. Nothing more chic.

Don't worry, it will be cancelled. Unless they go digital (or present to empty rooms like Armani did last season, but even that's too much of a risk), there's no feasible way for a live fashion show to happen until there's a vaccine for the virus (which won't happen until the end of 2021, at the very least). Saint Laurent cancelled something that was never gonna happen anyway...

I do wonder how this will affect the way we present and design collections. Undoubtedly, we won't have the same approach we did before the virus. I do worry about the smaller designers that can't do anything about this cancellation...

Brands (big or not) can shoot the collections on the fit models and send the images to Vogue.com
What is crucial for smaller brands is really to produce the collections they have shown in March. It would be pointless to re-start the fashion machine again without that.
Ultimately, consumption will start again. Things are going to be different but nobody can afford to skip a season of sales.

What I think will be interesting to see is the pricing of products.
