Sample Sales

OK so I met my wife at the Choo sale (after I hit Theory). She was there earlier because of an insider preview, where she scored a bag and some boots....she said within a few minutes everything good was gone.....girls grabbing anything in sight......(how else does stuff end up on EBAY... B)
A friend of ours decided to wait in the line later (sale officially opened at noon & some waited for 90 minutes) and she tells us that NYPD had to come break up the line.  literally telling people to LEAVE since there was nothing left inside and the sale was basically over.....

Gotta love a NYC sample sale!!!!

<span style='color:blue'>Took the chance - head straight for the sale afterwork. Plenty of size 40- but shoes were crap. The selection that were left were very very very used. The heals were battered, soles were in terrible condition.

It was a bad case of hand me downs.

But hey, what do you expect- I got there at 630pm.

Damn job

Softie, please don't kill me!!! I really was going to go the career fair at my school, but I could not prepare my resume in time, so I went to the Staff International Sale below again (thinking to get that white Margiela shirt for the upcoming interviews). EVERYTHING is 50% off of yesterday's prices - a real bargain. So I suggest you put on your Sunday's worst (they make you check coats and bags and there is really noone guarding them) and head there. There is a ton of Margiela stuff left in all sizes and deep discounts. I bought two white shirts ($40 and $50), the famous AIDS tshirt ($25), and a gorgeous wool heavy knit sweater for my wife ($80).

it's ok...i'm over it...i went back to tse and got a bunch more stuff with an additional 40% off... :brows:

I think this might have been the sample sale that faust was referring to (I'm really too lazy to go back and check the previous page) but just in case it isn't:

What: Helmut Lang
When: 12/6-12/9; Mon.-Thurs. 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: 80 Greene Street, between Broome and Spring Streets, third floor.
Why: Past collections for men and women are wholesale and below.

can someone explain to me what a sample sale is? it seems like they are only going on in NY and a little in LA but none in Chicago. So I've never been to one.

ed...a sample sale is a sale held by a designer or group of designers to sell off the samples used on the runway and for photoshoots in addition to any sttock which they have not been able to sell...either current season or previous seasons...

some pieces may have been gently worn by models...some will be brand new...

the prices are at wholesale(50% off retail) and sometimes even below...

they usually take place in the designer showrooms or somewhere nearby...which is why they are only in NY and LA...also in london, paris, milan, tokyo...etc...anywhere that there are showrooms... :flower:

Soft, it seems nowadays that these sales really aren't *sample* sales, but stock sales....I go to a lot of these sales and its rare that you see actual one of a kind samples or runway pieces, wouldn't you agree? That used to be the great thing about these sales getting a one of a kind or limited quantity item. Now it seems to just be pure overstock or things that made it into production but never sold. Also, with the net and all I guess there wouldn't really be enough samples to feed scavengers (myself included).....

theory...i think they're both...but the special customers and editors are invited to have first pick...so most of the samples are gone by the time the general public gets in... ^_^

i think it's true of the barney's warehouse sale now too...most of the good stuff is snapped up before it even gets to the warehouse sale...

question...don't you guys think we should close this topic now that we've decided to go month by month?... :flower:

So true about Barneys..if you go to the store during the last markdown, its cheaper than it is first time around at warehouse and you can return...i never goto warehouse anymore...except on maybe the last day or so when they take extra markdowns......

Ok, I just got back from the Helmut Lang sample sale, no line this time. If you are male, size 50, you should DEFINITELY check it out. 95% of the pants are in size 50, so are most jackets.

The men's selection is bigger than the women's. There are a ton of pants, plenty of jeans, jean jackets, and shirts. Much fewer jackets, tops, coats and blazers. Very few accessories, unless you are into orange. Apparently there are shoes too, but I didn't go to look at shoes.

It's pretty crowded, but it's not stressful. People are civil (strange :P ). Must be a reserved Helmut Lang customer that echoes the reserved Helmut Lang designs.

The prices are very cheap. Pants are $75, shirts are $40-50, jeans are $50, blazers $150, jackets $200, coats $300. Leather is more, but still around 70% off. Stock gets added daily, so I'm thinking to take my wife back.

And last but not least, I got a beautiful biker jacket; cotton with fleece lining (but not thick, nice for fall), with innumerable detail that only Helmut can arrange and still make the clothes look clean (geez, I don't know where to start, two zippered pockets with pullers, belt loops, front change pocket, zippered cuffs, rubber straps on the end of the cuffs, detachable back flap with chains which I have to figure out what to do with, one sleeve half exposed and would look great with a contrasting color top underneath, another sleeve has a different fabric insert). $200. IIRC the retails was around $1k on something like that. I was debating it, before I put it on. It looked like Helmut took measurements off of me.

I have to say, this year is weird. I haven't gotten anything decent at a sample sale for about 3-4 years and all of a sudden I'm finding good clothes at good prices. I think Softie is right, a lot of designers had very strong collections this year (and Helmut's collection from a year ago, where the jacket is from was IMHO one of his best ever).

Great shopping, Faust:-)

So Yoox is not having THAT good prices. Sorry for off-topic, I always wonder how much "good deal" is Yoox:-) Is it correct that they usually have 30% cheaper than retail prices?

Thanks.

Yea, Yoox prices are not that great, about 30% off retail sounds right.

congrats faust and thanks for the info...

ngth...i think that yoox has prices anywhere from 30% to 70% off retail dependig on the time of year...usually starts 30% off and items are from 1 year ago... for example they now have merchandise from last fall collections...

Thanks Softgrey:-)

Sale at Yoox sounds much better then:-)

I've spotted a super CdG H+ fall 02 black leather coat. It's pitty it is M.

I need to move to NY, ASAP. Hearing about Faust's new $200 HL jacket and all this stuff is pissing me off. :P Can you find a picture of it, Faust? I'd love to see it. If not, I'll surely go searching for the collection later to see if I can find it.

I think YOOX is usually more than 30% off. It depends on what you're looking at, of course. But I'd say overall, the discounts are usually quite a bit deeper. Especially when stuff goes on a huge sale and you've got a coupon code, and you have HL jeans for like $30.
