Schiaparelli Haute Couture F/W 2020.21 Paris

I also thought this looked very Jean Paul Gaultier....too much of everything and even the way in which he sketched these feels so passé. I don't hate them as drawings but you can tell he has a pinterest board called "80s Fashion Illustration" and the translation is so literal they serve only to remind you of Montana, Saint Laurent and Lacroix but not to envision garments for today.

Sketches serve to communicate the designers' vision. Someone mentioned Theyskens and there are plenty of his sketches floating around, all of them, no matter how simple, have that Theyskens soul that you can recognize from a glance...talent makes itself noticed.

This reminds me of those 90s Barbie collector sketches

Well....I’ve always felt his sketches are better than his clothes. There are some nice ideas here and there, and there are even some looks that COULD be glamorous. I’ll echo others that a lot of it does come across as late Gaultier Couture, which isn’t exactly the era of Gaultier’s career that I’d choose to be referencing, frankly...

But he’s not talented enough to see his ideas through to completion. Any pizazz that might exist in the sketches somehow always seems to completely fizzle out, leaving every look in his collections so far as absolute duds. Any possibility for glamour is totally missed.

He’s terrible at executing his vision...from fabric choice, directing the atelier (which is clearly a capable one), show design, model casting, styling...it’s all been a total flop.

I would agree it feels old. I was leafing through Dior's 1990 book (Ferré) the other day, so some of it is still present in my mind. Some of this could belong to those collections, which ARE quite beautiful and some of my favourites... but sure, it does feel old.

For example that I found on the internet, I'd rather wear this: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/13/1f/30/131f3074b4f3a10fdacfb375bc8b27ce.jpg or this https://media.gettyimages.com/photo...juillet-1990-paris-france-picture-id953510906

I don't think the plume-like detail would look any more modern.

I don't think the drawings are objectively bad at all. Just too stylized to resemble 80s fashion illustration and aesthetic. It would be better if he updated to an art style more personal and original.... but that's ultimately his choice.
