Ok not fashion related but fun to make neither the less.

And that's what's important, enjoying it! You've been getting creative all over the place from what I've seen in different places, keep it up! :flower:

great sewing there tia:flower: cant really see the monsters though which is a shame got a bigger picture?

ok so i took the pictures of my waistcoat i made:innocent:

i had to modify the pattern from an old burda one that my mother had ( pics included)

it was a test run but im really happy with the results. i love to put bright satin linings in my clothes even when they are plain i find it fun and i have a ton of that red left:ninja:

the back panels are a lining material which is a contrast to the front which is plain black cotton. i was going to go for big buttons to fasten it up but then thought that alot of smaller buttons wold look better ( i think they are very underated at the moment)

Thanks every one for your comments ill make the pic bigger and boots ... sorry elegance love the waistcoat, i like the lining :p

elegance! that waistcoat is super cute! can we get a pic of the back? the contrasting textures of the fabrics sound really nice!

bigger pic is that better ?? the second one along was one i hand stitched at like 3:30 am which would explain the crapness :innocent:

the contrast between the front and back fabrics. its abit creased and there seems to be something white on the back :ninja: blame andy for that one since i wore it last night dancing away and he kept some how making me end up on the floor  ....

:flower: evexa- that' so pretty so nice colors and love the green leaves. good luck.

well i tired making the dress from romeo and juliet, the 1968 version the balcony version. but it didn't turn out that well.

but would love to learn. other than that, i try to make jewelry. mostly earrings. and would love to learn how to knit.

^ I'm sure it turned out lovely, vanilla. :flower: I actually made the white juliet dress from baz luhrman's 1996 version, as a costume of course...it ended up being slightly different, though. maybe sometime I'll post it, but not today as I haven't the time. ;)

EleganceIsRefusal - good job on the waistcoat; brings Toreadors (the clan) to mind

tiamaria - the monsters are adorable! I love the first and last one, and the stitching on the second one adds to his/her charm.

hi everyone- i have just read through this thread and you guys all are so talented. Ive been reconstrucing vintage clothing for a while now but have never really sewn my own garments. now, i want to start but am a bit overwhelmed. a few questions

-would it be best to start with a pattern? or just start draping fabric. reconstructing the vintage has been a bit easier because there is already an established form.

-what are the best fabrics to start out with? i was thinking just a simple cotton jersey. I went to Mood yesterday in NYC and everytime i go in there, its just so overwhelming. you really have to prepare yourself for it beforehand!

-also, where are the best places to get patterns. i love the designer ones on showstudio but they seem too advanced for me right now. but in a few years i do hope to make that galliano jacket!

any help would be very appreciated.

Welcome to TFS *mle* :flower:

The easiest fabric to sew is woven cotton, but if you are used to stretch fabrics, you might be okay with jersey. I personally would start with a pattern so that you can better understand what pieces go into an item. But it's not always easy to find a pattern you like. You could make a pattern from an existing piece of clothing that you like (I think the current issue of Threads has tips on this). The Yohji one on show studio isn't very many pieces, but all of the patterns on there are somewhat of a pain to print out and tape together (although, they're free). You could just go to a thriftstore and get a cheap pattern to start out with. Or you could get a vintage pattern from ebay if you are into that sort of thing. I personally don't buy new patterns as they don't interest me very much, but if you like them, don't ever pay full price for one as you can always get them for cheap from somewhere. To give yourself an idea of what to shop for fabric wise, I would get a pattern first and then see what fabrics it requires. Or if you happen to see a fabric that you can't live without, you could buy it and then find a pattern. There are also loads of classes offered in New York. I think a few were already listed in this tread. Good Luck!

Now that my camera is working again I thought I would share some of my work....
First my work in progress; the Alexander McQueen jacket from showstudio. I had it done then decided I wanted a lining; it is kind of poofy b/c it is being held up by pins for the moment...

Also I made this Martine Sitbon origami belt that they had directions for in Jalouse

sea of stitches- thanks so much for the wonderful advice!

a la mode- that is absolutely lovely! great work, how long did it take it?

I don't sew too often, (maybe once in a while). Mostly DIY reconstruction, though...does that count? I also screen print.
