criticsdarling i adore all your tops they are very sweet! i adore all the little yoke details:heart: and an overlocker is great for finishing off edges but they are hard to thread up:doh:

Hi guys and girls

i'm planning on buying a home sweing machine. any recommnedations on what to look for? thanks!:flower:

dont buy a toyota one they are arful xx

I'm horrible, I bought a sewing machine recently so I could learn to sew... but I haven't touched it yet. :p

Any good sites with tips for beginners?

^ here's my advice:

to get started sew the following things:

- a pin cushion with applique (applique is so much fun, it's essentailly gluing)
- a sweatshirt ( the easiest thing ever, but looks great!)
- a pair of pajama bottoms
- a pencil skirt
- something with a notched collar, like a shirt dress.
- and then keep on challenging yourself and if you really feel gutsy make a blouse, it's time consuming:yuk:

Oh! By the way, I finally bought a serger!! I can't wait for it to get here. It's a Simplicity Frontier. Does anyone else have this?

wow! you're extremely lucky! i can't get around without one, so i have to either sew at school or pre-surge all my pieces there.

if you don't minds my sking, how much did you pay for it?

my latest venture is this navy blue shirt dress. very uniform.:p

and this lined pencil skirt. its a very sexy fit. it has a constrasting lining. the fabric is some sort of a light cotton/poly. what looks like a pleat in the front isn't one. it's a topstitched detail with an underlap.

overall, i rushed this skirt..it's got its flaws

Fantastic shirt dress pastry! I'd wear something like that...

I'd love to see them on someone...great job!

i'm not so advanced as to make my own patterns. ill be learning pattern making next year. until now i use commercial patterns.

omg so can I just say that using a sewing machine turned out to be a LOT harder than I originally thought. My first ever attempt at sewing/creating my own clothes was quite an experience today...still not even half done :(
Just getting the thread set up right in the machine was a process and I think something is still wrong because it keeps coming out...looks like another phonecall to my mom haha.

Don't give up liquid fire...it's a learning process...use scraps of fabric and just practice hems etc. it will all get easier in time...

Yep, practice, practice, practice. Be prepared to waste fabric, time and energy. With that, you will come closer to becoming better at the skill with every mistake you make.

When I sew, sometimes I'll use commercial patterns (to see what steps people make in order to construct a garment), but most of the time (due to my measurements and body type) I end up draping and patternmaking my designs instead.

My goal in designing and sewing is to make a completely different garment that is not already hanging in my closet, in a different fabric and color. It keeps it fun and makes the mistakes worth going through.

Keep it going!!

urd, the coat is wonderful.

amazing coat !
do you use patterns / freehand ?

thanks:flower: I'm very pleased with it myself as well

I'm studying to be a dressmaker, so I had patters I had done according to my own mesurements.

the coat is very inspired by stella mccartneys fall 05 coat. mine is a bit longer though.. and I wasn't sure how stella had designed the hem part, I bet not the way I did mine
