I am making a futuristic type of kimono, using vinyl and a knit fabric

Kitti, your daughter is adorable and must be so proud of her talented mum who makes such beautiful things for her.
etebe, looking forward to seeing the finished garment

Feline, get your a**e into gear & finish sewing the gothic cancan dress to show everyone!

kitti_mikulova ,why did you cut it like that? zig zag...

ettebe i've never seen a vinyl as nice as that..
looks very thin and pliable
the 1st picture looks like paper

Do you all have trouble finding couture quality fabrics? All of the silks I've been looking at are too stiff and ruddy looking, I love all of the silky buttery soft stuff that all the designers can get their hands on, but I've had no luck at the average downtown fabric stores.

Does anybody know what the quality of mood fabrics are? I'm thinking about ordering some online.

vilela Is it two pieces?^ It looks like a cropped jacket and mini skirt in same fabric
You can see the top floats over her hands, not held by the belt

i cut this way because hats pattern consists of wedges of the triangular form
you may see it on photo.
i explained which way i do the hats pattern.
Thank you kitti!
I reread it
That is interesting because I don't see any seams in the finished hat

I'm getting a sew machine soon and I am so excited! I sew at school and I'm going to be in a competition next month so I'm working on that

Do any of you recommend getting an industrial machine?

I just took a beginning sewing class at school and noticed lots of students selling their machines on the bulletin board there. The used ones are not so expensive, but I wonder how much upkeep they require?

After using the school machines, my cheap home machine seems really s-l-o-w!

It always seemed to me that industrial machines were limited in their applications, like many of them only do a single stitch of a fixed length/width--they just don't seem very versatile to me unless you know you are going to sew X number of garments with only straight or zig-zag stitches. I'm not an expert, but the only benefit of an industrial machine seems to be speed and power, and of course they tend to have better stitch quality. I have a pfaff industrial quality home machine though, but I know that a lot of the plastic models tend to be sort of cheapy with poor quality stitches.

Just a general question to throw out there...

Do you guys think sewing is easy ?
To learn on your own?
What kinds of things/techniques would be difficult to sew/construct? that having a teacher would really help.
Would or have you taken classes in sewing?

I have a sort of mentor offering to give me private lessons (expensive) and am considering whether to take it or not. I have taken a sewing class before and was quite disappointed..at how simple it was --though we only learned a few straight seams and how to finish them in the short class.
I learnt about notches and grainlines through my pattern making course.

Yes and no. The simple part is just hitting the footswitch and feeding the fabric. Sewing is like playing piano. Anyone can learn how to play 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' but not everyone will get on Mozart's level.

Learning on your own isn't hard after you learn the basics. After that it's more of a matter of you pushing yourself and learning from mistakes.

Curves are the hardest to sew together. Gathers too. Things like that would be helped by having someone show you how it's done, definitely.

I have taken a couple construction classes, and the learning curve was steep, but it eventually clicked in my head. Then again, I've used power tools and precision machinery for years as a mechanic/fabricator. I just applied my tech skills to a machine.

Bottom line is you're going suck at first, but if you keep at it you'll get better.

Also what helped as de-constructing garments as well.

That's true.. I don't really have a strong foundation in sewing/construction. Would be good to have an expert to show the way.. and her experiences. I know now having taken a pattern drafting course, everything is so much easier. I don't even have to work from a textbook, everything's in my head.
I will give her a call tomorrow then
She will be showing me couture sewing  No machines

Thanks for the response fbm !

I am assured that can sew to learn everyone. Any, even the most difficult thing is a consecutive set of simple operations. Accuracy and laborious work - here that nessesary always. From a wrong side the thing should look as beautifully as well as from within. Personally impossible it is not enough for me in sewing if it is necessary I will sew and hautte couture dress////

Dear sewing experts, is it possible to alter drop-crotch pants to a normal rise, or would it ruin the overall fit? They are fairly loose-fitting pants, if it makes a difference.

And could someone please come up with a better term than drop-crotch?:ermm: Sheesh.
