 where is everyone..
this thread is usually never silent...

mm..question

Does anyone know how to sew bias-cut seams?

When you join two pieces and press it open, the fabric grain on both pieces should be going the same direction??
Or does it matter?
if you make sure you cut it right on the bias, it shouldn't matter as when you do the joins, the grains will go in the same directions.

I found a tutorial that explains what I was looking for but I don't understand the sewing part very well.
Can anyone help me?
--> this is the link for the tutorial http://thesewingdivas.blogspot.com/2006/06/construction-of-inverted-kick-pleat.html
basically what they are doing is like getting a piece of paper, folding it in half. for the finished skirt, you'll have a back seam, but rather than doing it like a normal seam (with two raw edges sewn together) they're using the fold as their edge, which makes the pleat less bulky and seamless.

try folding a piece of paper in half pretending it's the fabric in the diagrams. the fold would be on top. basically they're creating a larger seam alowance which creates a type of pocket that makes the pleat.

if you need it explained further, PM me and im sure i could help :flower:

i was wondering for when i won't have enough fabric..
like i would sew on the bias,
but i could be joining cross-grain threads to straight-grain (so it's a sort of chevron)

hope that makes sense :ninja:

do you have a picture?? if it's a plain fabric (without print) normally it wont matter. i thought you were meaning like a strip of bias trim. is it an actual garment piece?? yeah, that does sorta make sense, but i would need to see a picture or something before i could tell you exactly

I'm attending a Victorian corset-making workshop over the weekend which is very exciting - I shall post the results here
I hope to learn a lot!

let us know also if you will be sewing it by hand or something like that

oh it's not printed.. it's silk dupioni/raw silk, with the thick uneven threads going one direction

i was told recently it won't matter if i use a stiffer fabric
but this silk is a bit light

it shouldn't matter much with that fabric, unless you're aiming for an unnoticable join. silk dupioni generally has a directional weave, so depending on whether or not the garment will be complimented by the change in weaves or not kinda depends on personal taste. it's kinda the nice thing about natural woven fabrics. i love the texture and sometimes you can create really interesting, yet subtle intriquisies in the work by adding a bias piece or purposely tweaking the grain/pile/weave of the material.

i have made several of these tote bags. i laminate old book pages, cut out the pattern, and then sew the pieces together. they get a lot of compliments, are waterproof, and can support at least 3 magnums of wine :innocent:

I finally finished (except the hemline=:innocent:) my skirt, It's not perfect:blush: but it works.
Ps. I'm still trying to figure out how to sew inverted kick pleats right.

keep practicing. i dont know if you have a book shop or library nearby, but there are some great books on tailoring techniques that offer guides onhow to do stuff like this. if i get some time, i'll do a sample of a kick pleat and take pics, step by step to help you.

the skirt looks great so far though!! great job!

Actually I'm going to take classes (when I get the time ...I've been feeling really lazy this days) so that'll probably help me.
But it would still be awesome :D If you get the time to do the step by step.
and thank you for everything-^_^-

argh i have so many things to share but i cant get a good enough picture of them i might have to wait til i've done my photo shoot until i can share how happy i am with all the garments i've made so far!

here's what i have been up to. i took MARC JACOBS resort 06 line of handbags called SWEET PUNK and did one of my own. complete with handpainted and distressed punk studs. made with a recycled lambskin skirt. i made faux ads too. LOL
