I'm wondering about that as well... I remember seeing some unretouched images from Madonna (Vanity Fair 2008) and they relied pretty heavily on post production. These ones are quite ok, tbh but I remember seeing a few from that Tamara de Lempicka LV campaign (FW 2009 I guess?) which looked bad.
