3 Quick Questions with Stevie Dance

As the youthful (and lionized) editor of RUSSH Magazine and one of the most in-demand stylists and creative consultants in Sydney and New York, Stevie Dance has swiftly garnered a cult following of well-versed fashion addicts who appreciate her deft use of color, texture and editorial references. What has always struck me most about Stevie’s craft is the innate effortlessness conveyed –– especially impressive given the all-embracing extensiveness of her pulls –– and the simplicity and restraint that instantly set her work apart.
It was an honor to sit down with Stevie for an insightful 3 Quick Questions session…

What do you think makes RUSSH so covetable?
I can only hope it is because people feel an affinity with it –– with where it comes from, and what it proposes. We are a small team, and it is literally handmade by the six of us. You know, RUSSH is about dreams still: not just fashion or just music or just anything. I think this resonates on the page. I hope it does anyway.

How would you describe your personal style… and how do you think it informs your editorial styling?
Truth be known –– clothes don’t really phase me as much as they should. I do favor pieces with a story. Or ones that make me feel like something great is about to happen. I like everything I wear to feel like I have had it for years. All my style icons are men. When I was younger I used to wish I could be Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club.

What trend of yore would you most like to see make its way back to the runways for Spring 2011?
Trends are a funny thing. But I think a woman’s back needs more celebrating. It is such a beautiful thing.

She's a damn genius, the styling here gives such a coziness to the editorial. Love it.

I'm gutted that she is leaving Russh, but I'm sure whatever she does next will be nothing short of brilliant.

Russh certainly has some big shoes to fill, she is what makes the magazine so amazing in my opinion.

^ TBH, I'm not sorry to see her go. I think she's a fantastic stylist, but not such a great editor. She pushed her fashion vision on all the editorials, and the result was that the magazine became quite myopic because the vibe was too uniform throughout.

I'd like to see her freelance as stylist for a while. I often wondered if her Russh contract prohibited her from working for any other publications, because you would have thought her talent would have other magazine editors coming calling. It would be great to see her contributions to various magazines. I think she'd fit in well at i-D, Dazed, LOVE.

Couldn't agree more. I've been buying rush since the first issue and since she became editor I have enjoyed each issue less and less....far too uniform

she has done a good job at russh, i cant be sure if its a GREAT job, although i still enjoied every issue of russh so far, but I also look forward into the future one. as previously said, russh has so much space for improvement and im looking forward to see how far it can go.

Nowhere else!
