Tatler December 2011 : Anna Friel by Rankin

Cute cover. Reminds me of old Interview covers.

Anna looks really pretty on the cover. However I'm really at odds with the fact that they dressed her up as Santa. As someone who doesn't celebrate X-mas I'm kinda appalled that Tatler thought it would be a good idea to create a cover which highlights a religious holiday. It really alienates others who don't celebrate this holiday and aren't even of this faith and I know I would never buy such a cover as this. It just has no appeal to me whatsoever. Perhaps next time they should create a cover which is a little bit more non-denominational and just focus on a winter theme?

^ But their target audience is hardly Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus etc! They unashamedly write for WASPs. I myself am an atheist, but I don't find someone dressed as Santa on the cover of a shallow magazine as appalling or offensive or alienating. I think this is because Christmas has largely transcended religion within English-speaking western societies. This cover was probably not intended as a religious manifesto, just fun seasons greetings. Now, if Tatler had dressed Anna as the Virgin Mary and had her holding a baby, it would be a different story.

^I do see your point the cover is meant more as a season's greetings but it still bothers me. Christmas has certainly transcended religion (which makes it so commercialized) in western societies but I'd still prefer if it didn't appear as a general consensus that everyone celebrates it. Because not everyone does. It wasn't meant to be a religious manifesto or anything but it still not everyone who reads the magazine is "wasps." But Tatler is hardly the first magazine to do a cover like this so I guess really I shouldn't be surprised.

One has to consider the fact that 70% of the UK is Christian, so I think it's fair to say that they were thinking of the "majority" when they thought of this cover. I'm also willing to bet that an even greater percentage does celebrate Christmas. I don't think it's that offensive, especially when the official religion of that country is a branch of Christianity.

Santa Claus is hardly religious nowadays anyway, he's more like the god of capitalism.

I don't really see why they should be "non-denominational" anyway, it's their prerogative. They don't have to appeal to everybody.

LOL they also did an Easter themed cover with Natalia in May. So, I don't think it's surprising.

i also come from a religion that doesnt believe that Jesus was born in December but i do enjoy the festive season and all the merry that comes with it thus wouldnt mind a christmas themed cover

I have absolutely no idea who she is but the cover looks kind of good albeit a little bit cheap. Also people should just calm down and stop stressing over a stupid celeb wearing a Santa hat on the cover of a magazine like Tatler.

If wearing Santa hats is an offence to the existence of other faiths, we're in for a rough ride in a few weeks' time.

Although to me, she looks more like a festive witch.

Anna Friel looks as cute as hell as Santa. Quite surprised that Tatler took this approach, but who cares and all this talk about 'religious holidays' and 'alienating' others who don't celebrate, is frankly a bit much. Tatler is very British based magazine so go figure. Also remember folks......Santa isn't real;) but if he was I'd be happy if he looked like Anna Friel.:D

She is such a darling, i love her as an actress, after that dont know much about her, but this cover is fun.

blueorchid had a very strong point about the UK but lets not forget Tatler is aimed at a middle/upper class society in Britain, people that are predominantly of a christian faith background, who send their children to boarding school and live a certain type of lifestyle, but i don't see how placing a santa hat on Anna Friel is offensive, its political correctness gone wrong, what next ? no santa's grotto in Harrods ? i think we've seen far more offensive material in magazines... :innocent:.

^I suppose I didn't phrase my sentences very well. It's not the most offensive thing I've ever seen but it's certainly political correctness gone wrong as you put it.
