Teach me your language I teach you mine

well...i speak czech and russian...but czech was already done by R-G so ill do russian. :flower:

hello-привет
love-любовь
fashion-мода
cool-классно

My language is portuguese
But I´ll not teach an english word I´ll teach a portuguese word that doesn´t exist in english. (cause brazilian girl is such a great teacher and this one is the only word left for me!!LOL)

the feeling that you have when you miss somebody or something - "saudade"

this word is used with the verb "feel"... so you feel "saudade"

ex: I miss you - Eu sinto saudades de você. (I feel saudade)

I miss my childhood - Eu sinto saudades da minha infância.

I speak about 4 different languages but I’ll add Kreyol and German.

Kreyol:

1.) Hello Part 1= When speaking to a friend or in passing Allo is okay. When speaking in formal/business settings Bonjour is a MUST.
2.) Hello Part 2= After 11:59 Bonswa is used.
3.) Love= Depending on the context. Love can be translated as Amou, Lanmou, or Renmen. New Kreyol speakers get confused by all this but it’s not that hard. One is for present, past and the act of making of love. (Fair Lanmou). The slang word for making love is Koupe which translates to “cut” in English.
4.) Fashion=Mode
5.) Cool=We don’t have a word for it. Only in the context of weather (oh it’s cool outside) and in greeting (how are you? I’m cool!”) The latter is :
Sap passé!
Nap boule!

This often gets confusing b/c when translated in English this means “What’s going on?” And the response is “I’m burning.” But the opposite is meant. Burn in this context equals cool (like "I'm chilling") and only when said like this.

German:

1.)Hello=Hallo
2.)Love-Liebe
3.)Cool= Kühl (That's what my little sister said it was. My German is not so good, so someone can correct me, if I am wrong.)

lols...in arabic we write from right to left,opposite to english..
you write from top to bottom right?

i heard there are words in japanese which are complex and r actually like a drawing of some sort...is that true? tellme more:)

We write not only from top to bottom but from left to right according to the situation. Our language has three sorts; Kanji(漢字), Hiragana(ひらがな) and Katakana(カタカナ);) The Kanji are derived from Chinese. Hiragana and Katakana originated in Japan. cos Chinese words are composed of all the Kanji are hard for Japanese people to read. The Katakana are used when we write imported words. ex.) your name:fashionbutterfly - ファッションバタフライ:heart:

To continue this lesson....

"saudade" can also be used with the verb "estar", which means "to be" but in this 1 situation (estar + com) means more "to have"

"estou com saudade de voce", means "I miss you", (literally, I have saudade of you)

i've seen spanish has been done here already so i'll put some slang from where i live ^_^

fashion: moda
cool: se sale!! (or even more slang- se sale fleje!!) , guapo.. or even chulo (but careful cause chulo can mean another thing :ninja:)

..."saudade"...

Hehe being a fan of bossanova, that was one of the first brazilian words I learnt...^_^ :flower:

p.s.
I even posted a translation of the gorgeous "Chega de saudade" in Today's Song Lyric thread (I hope I translated it right, I'm not very fluent in portuguese...anyway, it sorta made sense to me to translate there "saudade" as "blues"...^_^ )

Karma to fashionbutterfly for opening this brilliant thread! :flower:

Some words have already been translated in the languages I speak, so I'll go for the remaining ones (I'll put an apostrophe in pronounciation explanations to show that the stress goes on the syllable followed by the apostrophe):

Italian:

smile = sorriso (sor-ree'-zoh)
life = vita (vee'-tah)
music = musica (moo'-zee-kah)
beautiful = bello, bella or even bellissimo, bellissima [-o for males, -a for females] (bell'-loh, bell'-lah; bell-liss'-ee-moh, bell-liss'-ee-mah)

Russian: (first cyrillic, then translit, then pronounciation):

smile = улыбка [ulybka] (oo-lyb'-kah) - the "y" is pronounced as in "Bob Dylan"...:p
life = жизнь [zhizn'] (zheez-n') I'm not sure how to write the pronounciation of the first letter in english...anyway it's like the "j" in the french word "jour"
music = музыка [muzyka] (moo'-zy-kah)
beautiful = like in italian, different for males and females: красивый, красивая or even прекрасный, прекрасная [krasivyj, krasivaja; prekrasnyj, prekrasnaja] (krass-ee'-vy-ee, krass-ee'-vah-yah; pree-krass'-ny-ee, pree-krass'-nah-yah)

French:

music = musique (moo-zeek') but the "u" is a french "u", of course (to pronounce it correctly, try saying "oo" while shrinking your mouth as for a quick kiss ^_^ )
beautiful = again, two versions for males/females: beau, belle (bow, bell)
