Czech Allegorical Month Names
hey, what's up with this thread???

I like this:
In many European languages including English the names used to describe months are of latin origin, this is not the case in Czech. The month names in czech have an unusual allegorical meaning. For some months the meaning is clear for others it has been forgotten with time. Each month is also associated with a number of folk prognostics, usually relating to the weather.
Leden January
Month of ice. From the czech word led - ice. This is an obvious mening for a cold winter month.
Únor February
Month of sinking. From the czech word nořit - to sink. This is not so clear, but the most common explanation is the cracking and sinking of ice. Some people also claim that the meaning of Únor is from an old czech word for death - úmor.
Březen March
The month of birch tree. From the czech word bříza - birch. Some linguists also claim that the word for Březen comes from březí - impregnate.
Duben April
The month of oak-tree. From the czech word dub - oak. This is the month when oak-trees flower.
Květen May
The month of flowers. From the czech word květ - flower.
Červen June
This has a rather unclear meaning. usually its associated with the czech word červená - red. Sometimes its explained as the ripening of strawberies or flowering of roses other times by a name of an insect červec that has been used to produce red fabric dye.
Červenec July
The meaning of this month is the same as the previous month - Červen.
Srpen August
The month of harvest. From the czech word srp - sickle.
Září September
Originates from old czech word zařijen describing the beginning of deer rutting.
Říjen October
The month of deer rutting. From the czech word říje - rutting.
Listopad November
The month of falling leaves. From the czech words list - leaf and padat - to fall. This is an obvious meaning for this autumn month.
Prosinec December
The meaning of this month is explained to come from the old czech word prosinět describing a faint translucent glow. This is most likely related to the foggy weather and short dark days that are typical for this winter month.
