Success is wasted on the young. It's only once you've hit the bottom that you can fully appreciate the top. Teri Hatcher is a case in point. Who could ever forget her speech, effusive with gratitude and humility, at the Golden Globes last year? "Thank you so much for giving me a chance when I couldn't have been a bigger has-been," she gushed. Only 18 months previously, it had looked as though her acting career was over.
Riding high: Teri Hatcher
Teri made her name playing the bright, beautiful Lois Lane in The New Adventures of Superman and attracted legions of male fans in the process. A picture of her naked, albeit wrapped in Superman's red cape, was once the most downloaded image on the internet. Then, nine years ago, after playing a Bond Girl in Tomorrow Never Dies, she vanished, voluntarily giving up her career to devote time to her husband and baby daughter.
A few years later, when the marriage had failed, work proved elusive. At the ripe old age of 39 her time had been and gone, or so it seemed. Then came the hugely successful comedy-drama Desperate Housewives - and her salvation. The role of Susan Mayer, a struggling single mother, catapulted her back into the limelight.
This time around, Hatcher appears softer and less confident. Her straight bob has been replaced by longer, gently tousled hair and her bright-red lipstick put aside for a more natural colour. Structured tailoring has been replaced by floatier fabrics and her whole look, apart from the occasional red-carpet event (where she vamps it up in floor-length gowns) is more casual.
These days she also carries an air of vulnerability, having languished on the audition reject lists and suffered a painful divorce. And being back in the public eye has taken its toll on her. She has lost weight (she looks painfully gaunt at times) and seems to have had a little too much Botox to look natural.
Hatcher lacks the self-belief to be a trendsetter and prefers to play it safe in muted tones. She also avoids baggy clothes, favouring tight-fitting boot-legged jeans worn with heels, a pretty top and chunky jewellery.
But as she proved in a slinky golden number at this year's Golden Globes, at 40 she remains fabulous. Even George Clooney is rumoured to be in hot pursuit. All she needs now is to cut down on the Botox and add a bit of flesh to those curves.

This pale-blue top with pretty embroidery round the necklineis typical of Teri's preference for the simple and stylish. It looks great accessorised with a chunky ethnic necklace.
