this is a cool thread!
so i spent 20 minutes on ebay then photoshop and here's what i came up with for an outfit based on the plaid walmart piece.

i would alter the jacket by cutting off the sleeves and removing the belts ($0), and adding shoulderpads ($5)--total for jacket 14
necklace (made of old records, thrift store 1.50; 2pks nuts & bolts, kmart 2.50)-4

eta--in retrospect, i think i should have used some of the leftover $ to pick a less tacky bag...

good question...i should have checked first. i assumed as long as any alterations were free, or calculated into the final cost, they would be ok.
