The 90s Comeback

For a person who gets so sick of '80s fandom, this is a welcome change. Someone on tFS noted something that reminded her of the '90s, in a good way. I have to remember there have been some political issues and such. So that's somewhat a bad reminder.

For a person not crazy about rock music, I will admit that '90s rock was very cool. And so I envision if there was some 21st century grunge-style fashion. Another thing I liked about the '90s (especially mid and late) was the kind of fusion of '70s influences (platforms, chunky heels, flared/bootcut/bell bottom jeans and pants) and the real rebellious, sometimes curious fashion influences. There's just something about '90s fashion that always tends to tickle my fancy... only as long as it's not early '90s stuff, which was a minor continuation of what I've loathed about the '80s. It was a rebellious kind of style while also being a bit colorful and expressive.

Since we are in recession now and the situation was the same back in the 90's, do you think that affects on the fashion as well? I know fashion travels in circles but still I believe it's no coindicende we are back in the 90's style this fast.

Take grunge style for example: I think it was strongly affected by economy and the lack of money in peoples pockets. You took your father's old flanel shirt, used the same Levi's 501's until they have holes etc. At least I remember it being like this during the 90's even though my famly was not poor or anything. I guess we just spent the money wisely which meant not so much on clothes. "Style" had to be created from the little you got. It's totally different world now as we have much more options but maybe this economic crisis will make people think about their spending habits again.

Anyway, some of my 90's inspired outfits again with drop crotch pants, cropped jacket, flannel shirt, combats, pretty woman, mom jeans, backpack and big blazer.

In a month I will be photographed for a mag here for 90s style...and I really don't know what to say in the interview other than uhm, as I child I used to watch too much TV :D Shows like Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210, My So Called Life, Buffy, Baywatch, Clueless etc etc....all I did was stay in for the whole summer in front of TV :D

You know, an interpretation of the '90s is different for lots of people and lots of cultures. I just know the '90s especially for the mid-late 1990s style. I'm reminded of bootcuts and flares, chunky platform shoes and sneakers, and that sort of thing. So sometimes, we have our own take on the '90s. So I'm not sure how much different the '90s are in the United States as they are in Finland, indie.

great interpretation. that is so true. it really means so many different subcultures within just the 90s.

Last night, I curiously found a website that focused on fashions from past decades. I was looking around this link...

http://www.skooldays.com/decades/fashion_1990s.htm

...which features lots of general fashions and styles from the '90s (to be relevant to this thread). Some of these styles from the '90s are very interesting with all kinds of past styles expressed from the '90s. Some '90s styles were throwbacks to fashions of decades past. I know I noted things like platforms, flared pants/jeans, skorts, and things of that nature. Just so interesting how many styles from the '90s were emphasized ranging from returning trends and trends that clearly defined the '90s.

If we're talking mixing up '90s style with some of today's styles, what would YOU wear from the '90s to go with today's styles? Or do you just go all-90s like you're from "Clueless" or something?

Most of these stuff aren't appealing to me...the 90's are a very recent decade to be revived I guess, it feels kinda awkward

oh i second that
it just feels so silly after only few years of brake from dr.martens shoes, grunge etc.
it's like watching the first season of satc. suprisingly we all wore it, but nobody's uberproud of it.
probably some people had the same feeling about 80s revival.

but that's just how the fashion goes i guess ;}

I think the late 90's style was different than early 90's. I love the minimalist of late 90's style. Calvin Klein and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy are two examples.

Well when I think of late 90's I think of awful chunky shoes, flare jeans, and ribbed shirts. Early 90's was much cooler, I think.

90s fashion was horrible IMO. the jeans :ninja: everything else about the 90s was great.

The chunky shoes and flared jeans are what I LIKED about the '90s. So I'm on the other side of the spectrum here. I'm more about mid-late 1990s than early '90s. The early '90s only continued what made the '80s stink. But the early '90s aren't as overrated as the '80s.

One fashion memory I could recall from the '90s were those low-heel pumps that had a big pearl at the toes. Nowadays, you just see a bow at the front of most slippers or pumps rather than that a bow. The Keds Champion sneakers were the thong sandals of the '90s. At least I remember much fewer thong sandals in the '90s compared to now, where almost everyone (hommes and especially femmes) sport flip-flops. A look from the '90s I've never really liked or understood was when I remember lip liners were popular. Instead of putting on lipstick or something, you basically apply lip liner to sort of outline your lips. I never liked that look.

What I most take away from '90s fashion is the kind of hybrid between '70s-inspired fashion (tie dye, flared jeans, big shoes, etc.) and the fashionable (and social) impact of [a much more sane] Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The mid-late '90s was just more edgy and fun to me than the early '90s.

The '90s too me:

I was born in 1980, so the first half of the '90´s, I was just running around in bikerpants in different colours, and t-shirts, and sneakers.
When I was 15-16, in the middle of the '90s, I got into the whole hardcore scene, so it was all DC-shoes, baggy jeans, fruit of the loom t-shirts and sweaters, and other skatelabels, backpacks, mostly Eastpak, and straight edge.

can´t remember any particular style I had in the last end of the '90s... I remember really ugly spandex pants...
and whenever I went out clubbing, it was always some kind of suit, like pants, and a longer jacket that suited the pants... and a top... ugly ****...

it got better after that...

You know, an interpretation of the '90s is different for lots of people and lots of cultures. I just know the '90s especially for the mid-late 1990s style. Also, I think the end and beginning of an era get blurred. As someone mentioned earlier, the early 90's were still being influenced by the 80's,and I think that is true with every decade. You don't know how many times I see early 90's prom dresses on Ebay listed as from the 80's. I collect and sell vintage and it is hard even for me to decipher sometimes what decade an item is from.
