The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

^No. I like that they're filming it in Sweden. So few movies are set there, it will give the movie that added edge.

There are so many financial scandal/mystery/thriller films shot in New York.

I think David Fincher said he's going to try to make the actors speak with Swedish accents. So, hopefully he changes his mind if it doesn't work.

if the people behind the original adaptation were clever enough they would've distributed this film properly and i dont think we would have this discussion.i've never read the book or saw the swedish adaptation so i'm totally open to this.judging by the synopsis i've read online, the story isn't 'Swedish' enough therefore making it easy for it to be adapted by anybody i suppose, think infernal affairs and the departed, if done right you might have two films you'll enjoy.:D i must admit though it's depressing to see how xenophobic fellow tfsers can be.

Lol. Who's being xenophobic?!

I just saw the Swedish version today and really disliked it (and for the record, some of my favorite films foreign and are subtitled). I felt like the tame down the horrific incidents depicted to such effect in the book. I really liked Noomi but I don't think it was a GREAT performance. In fact, I think Lisbeth is actually a very easy character to play. She says so little and doesn't reveal much with non-vocal communication, either. Just about everything hard to perform is internalized. I didn't like how the cut down on time spent with members of the Vanger family. I didn't like that they cut out two important relationships that Blomkvist is involved in, and I hated how the made the Wennerstrom affair such an after-thought. Millenium was hardly ever mentioned. Blomkvist only had to stay for 6 months and didn't have to write the book.... they left out alot of interesting little things. It was also a kind of dull film. The book was so enthralling but I was kind of ho-humming and checking my watch during the movie.

Also, I'm confident a great director like Fincher can do wonders with the story.

I watched the movie recently and I really liked it. Of course, I haven't read the books so there were no expectations for me about what should have been included. But I thought, overall, it was a really engaging & suspenseful film.

As far as all the American bashing I just need to LOL. Film makers don't decide to re-adapt films because Americans don't want to read subtitles. Not sure where that myth got started. If a film maker, like Fincher, wants to make a movie it's because he feels he can make something creatively beautiful and worth-seeing. And, of course, to make money. To me that's the opposite of "lazy".

Definitely looking forward to the new adaptation. I'll probably read the books now in anticipation.

I watched the movie today and I was very disappointed in it because of the same reasons you gave. But I didn't like any of the characters as much I loved them in the books.
I do think I would have liked the movie so much better if I hadn't read the books first.

I didn't read the books so I guess that's why I liked the Swedish version. If the movie tones down some of the violence then I'm afraid to know what's in the book since the Lisbeth character in the movie had some horrible things happen to her.

I guess this could serve as a thread for the HW movie?
I just saw the trailer, great cinematography/photography. It looks way better than the swedish version, I was dissapointed with that movie...
This version of Immigrant Song kicks a$$!! by Trent Reznor and Karen O. It really makes me psyched for the movie lol

It was great and Noomi Rapace is perfect, but I feel like the filmmakers sacrificed a lot of the storyline and some of the minor/major characters (e.g. Berger, Cecilia, etc) that make the book as great and intriguing as it is. Cutting out Mikael's various relationships took away a big part of who he is. I also think the Swedish films weren't as risque as they should be considering how graphic and disturbing the novels are.

I'm also not excited about Rooney Mara as Lisbeth.

Ditto. :p the pacing of the film was very strange compared to the book; a lot of the events at the beginning were rushed through. So many relationships were cut out and the obsession with finding Harriet was weirdly downplayed. The movie just wasn't as tragic/creepy/suspenseful as the book was for me, so maybe I'll like the American version better. Also... maybe it's not as clear for people who didn't read the book, but the source material is VERY detailed and you could easily make several different movies just from the first book, depending on what was kept in and which aspects of the story were focused on most. Making the American version really doesn't qualify as pointless or lazy unless it's a shot-for-shot remake of the Swedish version, which it isn't. The approach looks quite different.

Is it bugging anyone how the American version is being marketed though? The promo with Rooney half naked and Daniel's arm around her... that's so out of line with the books IMO.

^Yeah that bugs me a lot, because they're trying to sexualize Lisbeth and that's not who she is.
In fact, she's strongly against it in the book and that's one of the reasons she decides to help Blomvist.

Hopefully, they will change it up or at least the movie won't portray her that way.

I hope this movie will be good. I have seen all three of the Swedish movies and I like them. Daniel Craig looks good for the movie. I am still not sure about the girl then have chosen to play Lisbeth though.

^All the other casting is perfect too.

Stellan Skarsgard for Martin Vanger
Christopher Plummer for Henrik Vanger
Robin Wright for Erika Berger
Joely Richardson as Anita Vanger
Goran Visnjic as Dragan Armansky

All of them are just what I pictured when I read the book.

One thing different from the HW movie that I think it´s better is that the rich people´s houses really look rich. Reading the books I imagined more wealth than I ended up seeing in the swedish film...

Stellan Skarsgard for Martin Vanger
Christopher Plummer for Henrik Vanger
Robin Wright for Erika Berger
Joely Richardson as Anita Vanger
Goran Visnjic as Dragan Armansky

That is a seriously good cast list! I'm glad that that Goran guy is playing Armansky; he actually looks the part and hopefully he gets to do more in this movie than walk Lisbeth down a hallway. :p

^interesting point & I agree. :) I was surprised most of all at the Millennium offices being so drab, they looked like they were operating out of somebody's basement lol.

Yeah I hope the Vanger estate does actually look rich too.
It's mentioned several times in the book how massive the estate all the mansions are, but the Swedish versions overlooked that little detail.

Also, hopefully this won't make me sound weird, but there's a point in the book when Blomvist figures out who the killer is and the killer tries to sexually assault him and Lisbeth saves him.
I loved that moment in the book, because it really showed how disturbing and twisted the killer was.
They cut it out of the Swedish version, but hopefully Fincher will put it in.

I'm completely unfamiliar with the book not the foreign movie, however, this trailer looks very impressive.
That's what trailers should look like instead of summarising/giving away the entire film.

New trailer. I know it´s a best seller what was it necessary to pretty much tell the whole story?

H&M has a new collection inspired by Lisbeth
but I gotta say I like those leather pants and jackets :innocent:
