The movie was astonishing! I can only warmly recommend people to go see it. It's wonderful to see a convincing girl protagonist for once, played by newcomer Dakota Blue Richards who's amazingly convincing and fits right in with the rest of the stellar cast consisting of Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliot, Eva Green and a very brief cameo appearances from Christopher Lee. Furthermore the voices of Ian Mckellen, Kathy Bates, Kristin Scott Thomas are remarkable.

Visually, it's a gorgeous movie. The soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat is equally beautiful.

With all of these things said, The Golden Compass does have flaws. The biggest and most noticeable is pace of the movie. But what people should keep in mind is that The Golden Compass is the first book in a trilogy, and therefore a set-up for the next two books. Equally in the movie, but with a completion of all three movies - done as well as The Golden Compass, it could be the next Lord Of The Ring serie. Because the books, The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass have an amazing story to tell.

While fantasy might not be your thing, you should still give it a try.

^ Thanks for making this thread!

I really want to go see this movie! I will see it as soon as finals week is over! lol

I read all these books a few months ago..I am excited to see this..but getting really annoyed with all the people up in arms about the supposed anti-God nature of it.

Oh I love the book!!! :woot: I really need to see this movie soon!:heart: I'm glad to hear that you liked it. ^_^ I'm always afraid that the movies will screw up my favorite books!

Ahhh, yes, the books are terrific! I really loved the movie and I'm crossing fingers for the movie to do well, as New Line Cinema, the studio, has said they will only film the sequels if it does well, and unfortunately it hasn't performed that well in the US boxoffice, where it counts the most! Overseas, it has done really terrifically, but it needs a boost in America. We can only hope that more people will go see them when the holidays start.

When you watch it, keep in mind that films are a different media than books, a lot of things were possibly not what you imagined, and some changes have been made. Those were necessary changes to condense a thick book into a 2 hour movie. But keep an open mind, and you will not be disappointed!

I'm seeing it this weekend and I'm so excited ^_^
(Yes, I'm a nerd. :ninja:)

I really want to see this - but it sucks that they changed the title for the Northern Lights which it was originally called

I really loved the books and have been looking forward to this for a while. But the bad reviews have dampened my excitement quite a bit. I'll still see it but I'm not expecting much.

I thought it was great and I haven't read the books or anything. The best movie of the holiday season so far.

i'm a BIG fan of the books and i have to say that i did enjoyed this film. i actually saw this thrice in 3 days with different sets of people

the only problem i have is the pacing and editing (which is quite understandable). i greatly recommend this film to you guys! and if you haven't, go read the trilogy books!

WOW! That's the spirit! I'm going to watch it again too, I'm supporting it as much as possible so we'll get The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass as well.

 me too! i badly want to see both The Subtle Knife (Serafina singing/chanting  ) and The Amber Spyglass!

bigger fan of the look (technology, fashion, etc) than anything else in the film.
it was all very "steampunk"
and i would definitely take any kids i may have to see this movie over chronicles of narnia or even lord of the rings. just the idea of it is really great--i didn't even know the politics behind the book and how supposedly threatening the film and books are...hahaha.

concept=good stuff

i honestly don't get all the fuss about this film...people who find it controversial should read the books first. in my opinion, a book (or a series thereof) or a film can't just change one's faith if it's very deep, secure and stable.

I read the books years ago so I was probably setting myself up for a disappointment by seeing this movie. But I was intrigued enough to ignore the critics and go see it... and I was disappointed.

All the interesting subtext of the novel has been lost and the decision to truncate the ending and finish on a happy note has ruined one of the best bits.

I saw it with a couple of people who hadn't read the books. They were mystified by the talk of Dust and have not been encouraged to seek out the novel.

I loved it! Nicole Kidman made the movie for me...so evil and SO glamorous!

After having seen the movie and loving it, I think I'll have to read the books as well. The movie was just amazing - great actors!

I've seen the movie twice and am now partway through the first book. There's definitely a lot that was left out of the movie, but I think that's OK - including everything may have made it confusing for those who hadn't read the books.
