The Hunger Games Thread

I saw this last night and I thought it was excellent. Jennifer really carries the film and your eyes are just drawn to her but that being said the rest of the cast gave really good performances especially Stanley Tucci. It was an icredibly tense film and I thought the scenes at District 11 were incredibly powerful. The reviews were right, not only is it a great book adaptation, it is a great standalone film.

The soundtrack is very toned down. It is classical (none of the TaylorSwift/indie/rock/pop songs from that album), it's all instrumental. In many serious scenes, the director just let the silence kick in a and it really worked. My favourite bit was at the Carnucopia, the sound completely taking over and making everything even more terrifying. Overall, I'd say the soundtrack was really good and it really complemented the film rather than overpowering all the emotional scenes as often happens with films nowadays.

yes i was so tense during the cornucopia. now that i had i chance to let it all sink in i do agree it was an absolute fantastic movie and you cant always tailor it exactly to the book

I loved the movie!!! It was 100% worth to wait. One of the best book adaptations and such a great movie!!!

I loved everything, music, action, actors, everything was perfect. That scene when Katniss left Rue in flowers in combination with the music, OMG it was so deep and powerful! All my friends cried. It wasn't that dramatic as the book but I understand why. Oh and I think that those who haven't read the book won't understand Katniss' attitude regarding Peeta. As for everything else, wonderful!

Caesar Flickman was priceless, oh and Effie's such a stunner! Loved the desert part. What about the president Snow, yeah he didn't look that dangerous but it was obvious that he's not that nice as he seems. Especially all those discutions with Seneca Crane and then the last scene with berries.

And the scene with 11th district, it was overwhelming.

^ahahahhahahaha, I loved the moment when he was out of the stage and she got him in a tight corner

I LOVED this adaptation! The performances were wonderful, while the direction and production design were outstanding. The handheld camera was a bit to take but was really effective and the Capitol looked fabulous. I thought the Games were a bit toned down but not so much that you didn't feel that anyone could die at any moment. Adn the Katniss and Peeta stuff just worked for me. (And they added more Gale to hint at the triangle to come, so that's good too.) Just so entertaining!! Already looking forward to Catching Fire. To play Johanna would be a dream come true.

Anyone knows when Catching Fire will start production?

I do not remeber where I read this, so I could be wrong but I think it begins this Fall in Sept. for a November 2013 release.

I also read this morning that there is going to be 4 movies. I'll try to find something that confirms this. :ninja:

I loved it!!!

At first I got stuck on "oh but that was different in the book, oh why did they leave that out?" but then I really got into it.

The way they filmed it was so good too, how they used lots of different angles and how the flashbacks were handled. It helped with the tenseness of the film and it didn't feel just like some slick hollywood movie.

And I liked how they included (spoilers) the riot scene from district 11. Even though it wasn't in the first book. When they saluted Katniss and the man in district 11 who you could assume may be related to or know Rue personally got angry, I was crying so hard!:lol: Everyone around me was sniffling with tissues in their hands!

And then the scene on the Cornucopia with Cato, that one scene gave his character so much depth.

^ I love the District 11 scene, it was done really well, Rue's death and that scene had me in tears too. It was a great film, I'd love to watch it again. All the actors were amazing and the capital looked great, i love all the costumes and make up. I like how the game makers were included. the lab scenes were really cool.

^ oh you just reminded me of something else I liked about the movie!

All of the scenes with Seneca and the Games Makers in their kind of "control panel" were really interesting! It made me realise that I'd never really thought about how they actually went about making the games happen. And then the bits with Seneca and President Snow!

There were also all these subtleties that people who read the books could appreciate but that wouldn't have caused confusion for people who hadn't.

^I really liked those scenes too! I had never thought about how the games went about, I sort of thought that once the tributes were in the arena it was up to them to kill each-other off. But I really liked that they showed the game creators controlling it in a way. It makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. They probably would want to manipulate the games so they have more action going on between tributes or interesting winners. I also loved the grid/dome thing that was above the arena. I pictured something similar when I read the books even though it wasn't mentioned at all. So it was cool to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that the arena looked like this.

Oh also did everyone see the Twilight trailer before THG's? Anyways, I have a really funny story I thought I would share about it. So when the Twilight trailer came on my sister and I started giggling wicked bad and then at the end they show Bella going to kill a deer. So my sister said rather loudly, "Oh no! Not the deer!" Pretty much everyone in theater was dying with laughter after that. But then to make it better with in the first few scenes of THG's Katniss is trying to hunt a deer. It was priceless.

^LOL

So are they including scenes from the 2nd and 3rd book in the first movie? Cause I just read the first book.

^ not really, more hints at things which come up in the other books. You have plenty of time to finish the other two before the movies come out :D

^Oh okay, good and thank you! I was worried for a minute that certain parts would ruin book 2 for me. I cannot wait to see the movie all of the reviews aren't helping :woot:

Ahh! It was amazing. Ofc there were some things I got annoyed w/ because they were left out, but I still loved it.
p.s a big F-U to whoever laughed at Rues death in my cinema.

Yeah it begins this fall, and they begin the trainings in July I think. And I've also read yesterday that there will be 4 movies. 4th will be out in 2015.

I wonder if Gary Ross will be the director of all movies? Or he signed only for the first? He did pretty great job and in genearal, I love his works.

I saw the film on Friday and thought it was great - but I think I"ll need to see it again. I was too excited throughout the whole thing that it just kind of breezed by. I kept thinking 'if I hadn't read the books - would this make sense?' so I kept over-analyzing everything

I thought including a scene of District 11 was perfect - such a good touch. Even though the books would always make good films, having the first person narrative in the books makes it difficult to convey some things (like Katniss's thoughts on Peeta's motivations) and I wish they might have made that a bit more explicit but overall I really enjoyed it and I thought the casting was great. I just need to see it again to actually pay attention this time ^_^
