but i was trying to think of some that maybe haven't been mentioned yet...

Well, there isn't really any one definition of "Indie". We seem to be going with film that are out of the mainstream on this thread. Just stuff that not financed by a major studio, or done on a smaller budget, or done in an unconventional way with a certain audience in mind, or just not intended for a mainstream audience.

well anyways, yeah, i do think that faust's recommendations are good though i really, really loved "underground". as for my personal recommendation, i'd say that krzysztof kieślowski's "the double life of véronique" is a must watch.

Frankly, I find the title of this thread a bit subjective. It seems to me, a lot of the movies mentioned here are only "indie" from north american point of view. For example, any movie by Kusturica is not "indie" because a lot of them were government-sponcered and in former Yuguslavia, he's is very famous, like Spielberg. The same with Tikwer, Lola was playing in every major theater in germany when it came outk, and Mihalkov, he's like the filmmaker "namber wan" in Russia, everyone knows him and he is also sponsored by the governemnt, a lot. If you live in USA, i guess, any movie that isn't playing in your local cinema is "indie" but it's just not true for the rest of the world.

i found your post to be rude. i don't think it's "naive" for north americans, including myself, to call a movie indie because it wasn't playing in our "regular" theaters. because, the way those movies have been playing in our country would definetely define them as indie. it's not about naivety, but it fitting the description. they're not saying the movies are indie ALL over. just indie from their viewpoint. this thread is for people to share movies they liked and not for any condescension on any of the member's part.

Dear Farren Fashion, and KIMAIR who wrote me a pedagogical message about how I shouldn't offend people and consider that most of us are "young and american". I didn't mean to offend anyone. I didn't mean to sound rude. I never used the word "naive" (Farren, why are you quoting it?) Somebody above defined "indie" as being independantly financed. I took it as a definition. And with that definition, a lot of movies mentioned are not indie.
Also, I wasn't quite aware I should adopt a "young and american" point of view before I make a post. I, for once, thought TFS is international. Honestly, I re-read my post and I couldn't find anything that was worthy of moderator's attention.

This thread has been kinda dead! So, what about the indies?

I recently watched a movie called Wild Style after many, many years! I forgot how much I loved it. It's like a time capsule of early hip-hop in NYC, and it's really wonderful. The style, the enthusiasm, the passion and energy are really inspiring to me. I forgot how much I loved this movie.

I hope some of you won't be put off because it's about hip-hop. It shows a time when hip-hop was about so much more than the violent exploitative sh*t we hear on the radio today. It was about self-expression for people who were overlooked and written off.

Daft Punk's new movie Electroma is kind of a cool arty flick
it was a midnight feature in Paris for a while

it is a film that is full of music, although none by the band

I guess I'm the only one who didn't care for Garden State...I also found Elephant to be extremely overrated.

Favourite Indie flicks: Mysterious Skin (so incredible, and so moving), Paris, Je T'aime (does it count? it was a compilation of short films), Ghost World (again, does it count? it had a handful of big names in it)....actually, that's all I can think of haha.
Other ones I enjoyed: My Summer of Love, Coffee and Cigarettes

I enjoyed Coffee and Cigarettes, too. My very favorite scene was with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop together . Bill Murray and the Rza came in second.

^I liked the "twins" segment, but that was partially cause I love Steve Buscemi.
And I loved Meg White's terrible, terrible acting. I thought it kinda added something to the movie.
