I’m just starting to study clothing, on my own. In the photo, you see a white dress on Sarah and Zendaya. I saw stylists discussing who it suits and who it doesn’t—and I honestly don’t understand them at all!
I look at this dress and it just overwhelms me: the monster flower, that kind of- not gold weird color, all those gathers— like the dress isn’t overloaded enough. And for me, white is actually the heaviest color to understand.
In another photo, there’s the movie Frankie and Johnny. These are two waitresses (sorry for the low quality). And their clothing- I understand that.
Frankie has a history of bad relationships, including one where she was assulted. Cora sleeps around, always searching for Mr. Perfect.
Frankie wears a uniform that’s too big for her, with rolled-up sleeves, and her skirt covers her knees. The rolled sleeves, the looseness of the shirt, the skirt length—all of it hides her femininity and avoids attracting attention from men. It also makes her look bigger visually—like in the animal world: if you look bigger, you can scare off a threat. The rolled sleeves suggest she’s ready to fight.
Cora is the complete opposite.
This—I understand. I understand how the same type of clothing can carry completely different meanings.
But this white dress—I don’t understand it.
And am I even doing the right thing by trying to analyze it like this? Maybe it’s all subjective? Maybe i look at it in a wrong way? I would really appreciate it if you advise me something to read or watch to understand all that.
