Make-up artist Thomas De Kluyver’s Instagram page is awash with unusually made-up faces, eerie stills from films like Death in Venice (1971) and throwbacks to images of 80s punk It girls like Siouxsie Sioux and Scarlett Cannon. These cult references are meted out in the Australian-born, London-based artist’s work, which often flirt with sharpness and simplicity. His thick, orange-pigment underbrows on otherwise bare faces for Salvatore Ferragamo’s SS17 Milan show showcased his tendency towards the brash but understated.
Thomas De Kluyver has mastered high-fashion, visceral, makeup artistry in a way that few others have managed. His looks – often monochromatic, lipstick-heavy, and never dependent on trends – are not a far cry from those made famous by 80s and 90s alternative rock musicians like Kim Gordon, Shirley Manson and Courtney Love. If his portfolio so far is anything to go by, the fashion industry could do with even more of what he has to offer.
