Corpse Bride (PG)
Tim Burton returns with Corpse Bride, a characteristically bizarre and macabre offering, hailed by many in the US as a rival to his earlier A Nightmare Before Christmas. The stop-motion animation looks incredible, and the cast list reads like a who's who of British actors, with Johnny Depp thrown in for good measure. Depp stars as Victor, an unhappily betrothed Victorian gent who goes into the woods to practise his vows and accidentally marries a jilted corpse (Helena Bonham Carter), mistaking her shrivelled finger for a twig. Victor's new bride takes him to the Underworld, where he discovers that the dark regions can be as much fun as the light (very much Burton's ethos). With the bitter-sweet air of Edward Scissorhands and the quirkiness of Beetle Juice, could this be Burton's most seductive movie to date?
