Models Toni Garrn, Karlie Kloss and More Donate Clothes for Charity
Toni Garrn got her model friends, including Karlie Kloss to donate items from their personal wardrobes to benefit charity.
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to walk a mile in Karlie Kloss’ shoes, here’s your chance. Well, if you’re a size nine at least. The model has ponied up and donated two pairs of shoes and lots of clothes from her personal wardrobe for fellow model and friend Toni Garrn’s second-annual Supermodel Charity Flea Market.
This is the German model’s second time hosting the event, which benefits the Toni Garrn Foundation, supporting girls in Zimbabwe. The flea market will launch with a private event at 35 Great Jones Street in New York on Wednesday and opens to the public after 2 p.m. that day. After last year’s demand, Garnn has extended the shopping event for two more days, with additional hours on Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What is on offer besides Kloss’ shoes? Stylists have donated gowns and accessories, while retailers, such as Forty Five Ten in Dallas, have given boxes of unworn pieces (including a brand-new Azzedine Alaïa handbag). Fashion brands such as Brock Collection and Frame Denim have donated pieces from their lines as well. And with lots of models donating their own clothes, it can’t be any surprise that there will be plenty of quintessential model off-duty looks from Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney and The Row for the buying. Prices at the sale will be up to 80 percent off retail and, according to Garrn, there’s a ton of merch that has never been worn — or barely worn. After all, this is the selfie generation.
“It’s a lot of fun, because a lot of models come to shop from each other,” Garrn told WWD. “It’s such a practical cause as well, because nobody has room for all the stuff they love. We love to shop, but we don’t have any room for it. So everybody’s like, ‘Yes, take it!'”
The charity raised $20,000 last year and Garrn projected this year’s sales will be far greater.
If you find yourself in need of a street-style upgrade ahead of New York fashion week’s September 8 kickoff, model Toni Garrn and her cadre of industry girls have you covered. Garrn’s second annual Supermodel Flea Market will take place in Manhattan from September 7 through September 9. “I had the idea three or four years ago when I just realized how many clothes not only models but women and New Yorkers have,” says Garrn. “I wanted to give things away or sell them somewhere, but I realized that some of the pieces are so special—limited editions, designer gifts—and needed to be appreciated. When I started my own charity foundation and was looking to raise money, I was like, ‘Boom. That’s it!’”
Head to NoHo to sift through clothing and accessories donated by the supermodel’s runway friends, including Karlie Kloss, Constance Jablonski, and Kasia Struss, all to benefit the Toni Garrn Foundation, a charitable outlet created by the Plan International ambassador to help keep girls in Africa, specifically Zimbabwe, in school. And for those of us who don't have supermodel figures, Garrn says not all the items are sample sizes, and most of them have never even been worn.

For her part, Garrn is looking forward to the fall season. “It is a perfect combination between my work in the fashion industry and my work for the foundation,” she says. But aside from the event, what beauty and fashion changes mark the model’s seasonal transition? “I have dry skin, but using oily products in the summer can get so gross,” says Garrn, who recommends Caudalie Divine Oil for added moisture as the temperatures turn. “You can use it for face, body, and hair.” Style-wise, the model’s transitional routine centers on billowy printed pants. “I'm not a big jeans fan because they are simply too hot—I’m wearing all these blue, crazy-long pants right now that are still summery but will definitely keep me warm if it gets chilly out later.”
