I'll go to NY end of next week.
What are your favorite restaurants? What are the hippest places?
Food is important but I like a nice decor and people watching as well.

People watching: Try to reserve Sunday brunch at Balthazar, or dinner at Schiller's Liquior Bar - both places are owned by McNelly who seems to attract celberities like lamps attract moth (don't ask me why, because the food, while being very good is not outstanding, and the decor is nothing special). Spice Market - the latest venue by Vongerichten is a red-hot spot in the red-hot meatpacking district.

Dammit, I should work as a NYC hippier-than-thou tour guide, what am I doing programming???

My girlfriend who lives in NY already got reservations for SPICE MARKET, ONE and MEGU. I'd like to go to FOUR SEASONS as well. I know it's kinda old and stuffy but it's something I always wanted to do (one of the classics that truly epitomize Manhattan)
Faust, when I'm there I'll see my schedule and PM you. It would be nice to have a drink... in a hip bar of course B) .

If you don't get into Balthazar (stop by and eat in the bar if you can't get a reservation...), try Lucky Strike on Grand as well... same owner as Schiller's/Balthazar
You'll like Spice Market went to a F-week party there before it was open w/ small tasting selection).
Also a big fan of Hue' in the West Village/meatpacking district.
Your list is nice already... def. wear a suit to The Four Seasons as Faust suggested...

seriously...in another thread they mentioned the opening of "private park" in the hudson (and there's also town. in the chambers hotel)...industry (food) is nice. but it's been almost a year since i've been in the city so...take all of these recommendations with the veritable grain...

-Pastis (most definetly not known for thier food-people watching all the way) on little W. 12th
-Fred's @ Barney's (ever time I am there I see another celeb. Biggest inclulde Martha Stuart and Issac Mizrahi), the food is actually really good too
-Nobu (isn't that hard to get into for lunch if you want to)

for dessert
-Magnolia Bakery (delic cupcakes, accros the street from Marc Jacobs on Bleeker)

Yes, Pastis is another McNelly institution. I didn't mention it because I figured Spice Market is the hottest thing in the meatpacking district right now, but Pastis is still buzzing.

I went to LUPA last time I was in NY. Very good. Not as exceptional as BABBO but half the price and easier to get a reservation.
TOWN has good reviews and HUE looks nice (and is close to the place where I'll stay)

Lindy's, which is a cafe place underneath the MTV studios, has great cheesecake, and also having tea at the Trump tower! (and like I said before-Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity!)

I haven't been to too many restaurants in NY yet- save that for when I move there in a few months. I have been to Oceana, Balthazar, Tavern on the Green, and some other places. I really liked Balthazar.

Yeah, Tavern is a classic NYC spot to visit...worth to check out.

And yeah Belthazar..

Next time I'm there I need to go to that restaurant of the guy that used to work at Ginza Sushiku in LA..he moved to NY but I forgot what restaurant he now is at..
