Regarding checks, I think they will be huge for next summer, following on from the tartans, does anyone know which designers I could draw inspiration for checks especially on heavier weights for jackets?

there are way too many prints in the market...

^ yohji's tweeds were genious

at the first glance, got enthusiastic the primitive of 'raw cut' leather helms/finishings but i didnt like the way this got applied at the actual garments

Yohji's fw08.09 full skirts are absolutely yummy
thiis shape/volume is certainly a must-have item for me.

now that the market is been 'educated' with volume
and quite introduced with length (eg long summer dresses)
Yohji's long full gathered skirts could be evolving as a niche trend for ss09

weaves @ Jil Sander FW 08 were also very luscious..
coarse metallics, moire, as well as graphic patterns + grainy textures
i even tried to make some myself

I have a question
How many 'stories'/themes are there usually for a season?

There is one for sports , one for casual wear , and one for formal (?)
And then another for menswear...
Is that how it usually goes?

^ I think there are generally more than that ... are you talking reality, or forecasting? In reality, it seems like often you have major designers leading the charge in different directions ... plus you have the themes that are there, but flying under the radar, still "in development" ... identifiable, but yet to emerge at the "top layer" of fashion ...

^Yeah the designers with their previous seasonal collections
and also the market inspire the trends for the future

But usually aspects of these have to be translated into a 'story'
Like the textured woven fabrics being mentioned here in the more recent posts.. Inspired by other designers, but afterwards the forecasters have to find a way to develop that concept, so it can work as a design tool/aid-- so that designers (textile / fashion / etc) can use it to create their own interpretations...

I think that's part of the essence in trend forecasting... to allow faster development of ideas , as well as to sell better

^ Elle Decor is interesting in that they draw the parallels between fashion and decorating ... Show runway photos alongside paint, wallpaper, fabric, home accessories, etc.

Coral and black were two recent interior trends to be obvious carryovers from fashion, but sometimes their parallels seem a bit forced or obscure

Just wanted to mention Premiere-vision has updated their website with the info for Spring/Summer 2009 I didn't copy it word for word mostly so you'll have to check the site for it.. The original it's quite a lot of text actually

themes are (with sample fabrics)

- activating: breaking free from constraint , pro-action
explosion of colour/texture/decor

leaving room between body and fabric for graceful movement
structured volume so body can move freely: quiltings, darting, stitching, pleating

fabrics ultra delicate and fine but dense + opaque (to go with idea of free constraint)

fabric surfaces ... a cheerful mess
scribbles , scratches , new colour combos

fabric finishes ... washed out, sun-light faded, chalky coatings (to mean "optimism")

- idealising: open-mindedness , accepting contradictions, new visions
keywords "artificial garden" and "fantasized nature"
ie. artificial w natural

Signing on for a sustainable-development approach without giving in to moralising. Choosing bio-diversity and showcasing the ecological potential of synthetic fibres.

same idea as activating... forward-thinking, taking hold of optimism
mix and match.. about focusing on the inside person and letting that show through to the outer + with no constraint , no self-consciousness

fabrics matt is key / minimised shine (to mean "no deception")
anti-stretch , blocked textures, thick silks , strong cellulose fabrics (ie. canvas)

I would say Rodarte for one, looking at his spring and winter 09 it all seems "deconstructed" and free spirited?
any thoughts?
