UK Vogue January 2023 : Iman by Nadine Ijewere

This is now out on my library's reader... 238 pages. In the editor's note, it's mentioned the Vogue Germany story about the politician is reprinted, and Munroe Bergdorf writes about transition (turns out to be a one-page piece). The Archive page looks at David Sims/Linda Evangelista from Jan 1996. The Iman editorial isn't accompanied by any other imagery (no collected images from her career etc). Back page is 'What Would Anok Yai Do?'

There's also a reprint of the Sylt editorial (Abbey Champion & Patrick S). Looking at the above editorials, they feel to me like the bland side of UK Bazaar. On the other hand, this means the issue seems more grown-up and oriented towards adult women, instead of sloppy athleisure and other stuff you'd never wear beyond your twenties, and I can appreciate that, even if it doesn't excite me.

British Vogue's lucky I subscribe, because there's not a single element to this whole entire issue that I'm liking... not even the inclusion of a Lachlan Bailey fashion story with the beautiful Ida Heiner. The content (just like last month) feels so amateur, weak and instantly forgettable.

You know when they say, 'mix some good pieces with some not-so good pieces and it will still work?' Well, they mixed some good pieces (Lachlan Bailey and Craig McDean) with some not so good pieces (everyone else) and you know what, it still doesn't work. The entire issue just comes off flat. And why on earth would you hand over an icon like Iman to someone who's work is so not even close to Iman's level? She deserved better.

Not much conversation occurring around this issue, other than what we all thought of the cover, when we first saw it... The interview inside mentions that Iman had recently broken her wrist and had been ordered not to use that hand - reflected in the images, where hands are mostly hidden or only one hand is used to any great effect.

As much as I like the idea of Iman on the front - and I received the cover that I wished for - I don't feel like this is a keeper. The compromise is probably to just keep the cover as a clipping.

Clippings are what you do when it's winter, and the wind and rain are lashing against the windows, and you're going nowhere for at least a fortnight, when there'll be more light in the day.
