UK Vogue October 2019 : Kaia Gerber by Steven Meisel

A lot things can be said about Kaia but I love how she gives herself in her work.
I really love her ed. She always deliver in terms of energy... aging will give her face more character but she is good model.

The rest is quite dull mostly because it’s disjointed.
I like when an issue has a thread that ties everything together.

When Alt put the Hedi advertorial, it made sense as the issue was about 3 different eras of fashion.

BV has that hard-edge modernity and then you have the romantic Hailey ed that doesn’t make sense.

We had so much hope on Edward... he let us down.

A good stylist doesn’t mean a good EIC. Apart from Meisel and inclusivity, what did he add in terms of fashion? Nothing!

Kaia's cover is one of the best Vogue covers I've seen this year, I absolutely adore it.

I'm only guessing here....but if doing "collabs" is how UK Vogue will afford Meisel McKenna shoots then I think Edward feels it's worth it.

I'm just annoyed with the work Meisel has done for UK Vogue. He hasn't done anything ground breaking. It is one basic studio shoot after another. The photos are beautiful, but there's no story or depth behind it. Meisel used to do incredible stories for Vogue US and Vogue Italia. I don't need Armies, Oil Spills, or Bank Robberies every month. But even when he tackled simple concepts, like his laundromat shoot for US Vogue, you felt the fantasy. Meisel has really lost his edge.

And if all you can afford are studio shoots... then maybe save up so you can do something big twice a year instead of these simple shoots. Or then you really need to bring it with styling. All the looks McKenna did here are extremely similar to one another. Why not book Karl Templer, Patti Wilson, or Grace Coddington to work with Meisel instead? And leave McKenna to work with David Sims? Why not give Elin Svahn a chance? Meisel knows her from when she worked with Templer. Or Gabriella Karefa Johnson? Can't he work with someone who's on the come up?

I just feel like if you don't have anything of substance to say then move out of the way for some photographers and stylists who do. Having a magazine to use as your platform is an incredible privilege, and it shouldn't be wasted on something that's dull.

If I was Edward I would be feeling a bit ripped off. You paid how much money for Kaia, McKenna, and Meisel, and only got to print 6 images? That's insane!

Maybe he don't want to do the same he made with Franca, in sign of respect for her. His work with Anna has the commercial element you won't see in the eds for VI. Since he start to work for Edward, in W, most of his photos were in studio. Meisel didn't lose his magic. You can notice that in his lastest fashion campaigns.

I'm sorry I don't agree. I highly doubt Meisel has resigned himself to mediocrity just because Franca died. The best way to honor her memory is to create work that highlights what Meisel learned while collaborating with her.

No I think these editorials by Meisel has everything to do with money.

You mention his recent ad campaigns. They're incredible! Which goes to show that budget is the issue! Zara and LVMH can afford to spend infinite amounts to appease Meisel's desires. But Conde Nast can't afford to pay for editorials in the way Meisel grew accustomed to. So I believe Meisel is getting busted budgets, he's going to give us busted editorials.

Which is why I think they should stop using Meisel so frequently, and start using new talent who won't feel insulted by these budgets. I kinda feel for Meisel too. If I spent a quarter century busting my ***, and have reached a level of success that demands a certain budget, hell yes I would feel annoyed that I would need to deal with meager budgets. Maybe he should just put out a coffee table book, and do ad campaigns, and just chill.

This editorial with Kaia is fine. It's pretty. But it just doesn't hold a candle to any of the work he's produced in the last 15 years.

For me the Kaia photos are beautiful. But 6 photos, coupled with an unnecessary two page interview is ridiculous! I also like the Bottega pictures by Jamie, so McKenna did a pretty good job in this issue as far as I'm concerned.

Once you get past these two very short features however, the whole issue is utter trash. It's ironic that UK Vogue is one of the few magazines to have a healthy page count, month in, month out, and yet flicking through this issue you can really feel the squeeze on budget. Dare I say, even more so than publications that are so in the red that I looked through after putting this down.

Two issues in row that have been drained of fashion, and the previous ones since about March/April haven't exactly been great either! I may have to take back what I said in my earlier post if this is the way things are heading. You can draw Meisel, Meghan and Lindbergh to work for you, and even to help your magazine pull in financial gains that others are not (in the case of September), but what's the point if you're not going to reward your readers with something powerful and with impact?

Now that I've got my subscription copy, I love the cover even more. It's a striking image but the glossiness of the print just adds that something extra.

But I don't get why Kaia's editorial inside has no connection to the cover. Did she strike a pose in a 60s fashion for a set of shots that never made it to print, or did they spend all that time formally dressing her up for a single cover shot, then spend the rest of the session shooting her in fishnets?

The fishnet editorial is very blah, but that cover shot vaguely reminds me of Vogue Italia from 1991 where everything was shot against a white background, and supermodels played homage to the past. I'm choosing to imagine an alternate timeline where this is the cover of Vogue Italia and there's actually an editorial to go with it.

Well, Vogue Italia used to be broke most of the time according to some people who worked for it (including Peter Lindbergh) but he still managed to create amazing stuff. I don't think it's just money...

Vogue Italia used to be broke for every photographer but Steven precisely because most of the budget went to Meisel’s cover stories.

Sales of this issue weren't ever going to come close to the way last month's issue flew off the shelves, but I don't get the impression that this one is shifting at all. Doesn't help that it seems to be full-price in most places I've seen... perhaps a £2 cover price would have kept the sales momentum going.

Kaia is getting better and better. She only needs time. One of the best of her covers.
