HARPERS BAZAAR JUNE 2005 RENEE ZELLWEGGER

BEST EDIT: karen elson shot by solve sundsbo. superb fall pieces styled by katie grand. this is the only story up to bazaar's recent high standard. karen is awesome, she has platinum blonde hair & plays a winnowy sex symbol like a film star circa mid 20th century. I really love karen's glam poses here & I think anja, for one, as much as I love her, should check out karen's model moves here- they are winning romantic & hot. this is a great edit very classy & elegant & its what this issue lacks otherwise. I still feel for karen as one of the most beautiful models I've ever seen rating 8. 25 of 10.

Edit #2/Cover renee Z by alexi lubomirski. Given that this is an actress edit, renee comes off really well. shes styled a lot like that 60s movie she was in with ewan macgregor [forget the name] and shes looking good especially her bouffant hair & the pretty art-directed pastels on the cover. on occasion she does have that sour lemon face but I still find her oddly attractive & while alexi's pics are a bit matter of fact & indebted to 60s style, they do work better than many actress stories [compared to selma in june vogue, renee is far better styled & this edit is softer & prettier than selma on the beach by testino]. some cute pics but also not amazing. rating 6.5 of 10.

Edit #3: cameron shot by terry richardson. what a disappointment. I would hope that terry would go rawly sexual with cameron but this is just a typical bazaar clean cut colorful edit. contrary to some peoples opinion, terry's sisley ads with val avdeyeva & nicole t are great, really sexy with the girls on their knees & posed 180 on the stairs. theres nothing like that here, it looks like a typical demarchelier outdoors edit & I am SO disappointed that terry didnt go wild & sexy with cameron, shes one of my favorite models of 2005. cameron is good here but terry really let the side down. rating 7 of 10.

Edit #4: valentina shot by anthony ward. valentina is pretty and the dresses styled by jenny capitain are feminine & cute but this is like a dull vogue edit that meisel would turn in- grey backgrounds,. cliche 70s/80s leaping model poses. I hope for a lot more from valentina & this isnt it. its an ok back of book feature but imagine a valentina bikini story, maybe with anja & marija too, shot by richardson. THAT would. be HOT. rating here: 6.5 of 10.

VERDICT: THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE. Look at this issue on the newsstand to see karen, cameron & valentina. its an OK mid-year bazaar & theres more shopping & hint stuff inside but the main edits were pretty unimpressive except for karen shot by sundsbo. see you on the beach!!!!

-------------------------------------

the karen elson ed "fall preview" is so supremely sublime...it's probably the best ed i've seen in an american fashion mag all year. beautifully styled by katie grand, lovely lighting and photography by solve sundsbo and karen is absolutely stunning.

by contrast, cameron's ed with terry richardson ("sexy, sultry, bold, bright") falls completely flat. she has absolutely no sex appeal and the shots are bland...where's jessica miller when you need her? and every outfit is paired with ysl's silk open toe pump with the pom-pom...why?

valentina's ed (a dress story) is ok...nothing earth shattering which is a shame because she is gorgeous. this is the second issue this month (she's also in the june allure) that she has been underused...i hope it doesn't become a habit.

my verdict: take out the cameron ed and this is a great issue...good coverage of the f/w shows (much better than Vogue), the fashion news section is great this month (including jewelry from the f/w runway), the piece on renee isn't half bad, the valentina ed is good to very good. karen's ed sealed the deal for me...this issue is way better than vogue, although not as interesting as W (but when is bazaar, really)? i give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Fully agree.

(The shot on p. 139 is spectacular though.)

Also, the subscribers' copy is the exact same this time around except with less writing.

Loved Karen Elson and Valentina Z.

I'll buy Bazaar whenever there's a stand-out editorial but often, much of the content seems pretty disposable (or flammable - take your pick:P).

The cover is undoubtedly eye-catching, though I don't really like it...

to me bazaar's cover always struck me as..bizarre. i feel too disconnected from the type and the picture..and if i recollect, they have an way too many adverts.

June Bazaar - Renee Zellweger

24_1_b.JPG

Renee Zellweger in what is quickly becoming the editorial darling of the season -- Balenciaga. Mario Testino's assistant Alexei Lubomirski (Jacquetta Wheeler's beau) photographed her for the cover and the pictorial inside. Make no mistake, I loathe a Zellweger cover, but the story is very well styled (and short!:( there are only two dresses (Balenciaga, and a backless Gucci LBD that isn't necessarily from the runway), both worn with peep-toe Manolo Blahniks in green.

Editorials:
*A lovely close-up of Julia Stegner opens the beauty section.
*Ujjawala shows up in small pictures accompanying an article.
*Fall preview & What Celeb Wants: I've always found Bazaar to be more spot-on than Vogue.

*Terry Richardson photographs Cameron Russell in a sea of tropical colors. She may be 16, but Cameron exudes the kind of sexual confidence that Gemma Ward, Heather Marks, etc. could only dream of having. Here, she looks like a beachy goddess, even though she's not even wearing swimwear (the token swimwear edit went to Caroline Winberg last month). And I love how the looks are anchored by YSL's pom-pom heels in different colors.

Valentina appears in "If You Can Only Buy One Thing, Make That A Dress" and beautifully pulls off pieces from high and low: Rochas, Azzaro, Missoni, Sophia Kokosalaki, Matthew Williamson, Armani Collezoni, BCBG, and DVF.

And I don't mind Karen Elson in the fall preview because I like how it is presented. The tone of the shoot is muted and gloomy, and the clothes are dark and intentionally dull--which is perfect chance for the quirky accessories to shine, as evidenced in the black-and-yellow striped heel from Gina Couture. This is not meant to be a forecast of the hot items for fall. Instead, the stylist got a chance to play before buying season really begins. This spread could easily fit into the pages of Vogue Italia.

Quite happy with Bazaar and think this may be its best issue of the year.

I just got this in the post. This is a great issue especially since the Salma Vogue sucks big time.

Renee article is good. HB always shoot her well. The cover is horrible but inside shots are fab. The only thing I didn't like was the Karen Elson shoot. What happened to her lovely red hair. She just looks like all the others now

I agree with Liberty Rose that it's the best issue so far.

^^ Except that I found myself wondering WHO was writing some of the articles I read through ... I don't usually buy Bazaar, but that one article at least - about spa treatments - am I naive to the whole magazine article-writing-process or is it just dumbed down TOO much? I hate when writers expect us to believe that they feel, see, live, every emotion that could possibly exist, in order to get a story out. Believability means reality, IMO.

Anyhow - Someone forgot to airbrush Melania Knauss' hands in her one jewellery ad - they are massive-looking, not at all attractive.
