US Elle February 2023 : Kaia Gerber by Cass Bird

The cover is fine & the edit is a little bit bland & looks a spread from Porter Magazine.

It's fine, still better than what Vogue put out. I guess Nina understood what worked with Vogue covers before and applied it to Elle. Anna toned down glamour in her magazine while Nina kept it and consistently showed it.

I always look forward to Elle US covers more than American Vogue now. I am frequently disappointed in the latter.

Received my copy in the mail this past week. 112 pages. Aside from the Kaia, there’s two other editorials in the issue. Both studio-set white background affairs. LV booked 10 pages of ad space for the Kusama collection.

More pages than vogue, right?

Vogue's front cover has an uncounted 2-page fold-out ad, unlike Elle, so Elle's page count says 112 and Vogue's says 110 but they're the exact same, really.

Samira finessed both Anna and Nina lol. Harper's Bazaar has a whopping 118 pages, but with the better, thicker paper, it feels more substantial. Kinda pathetic, but that's what we've come to.

So her new movie will headline at SXSW in March. Hence this makes sense. I take the nepo baby as a running joke but she is quite a good model.

This is so crazy, not even beauty brands buy this many ad pages. I wonder if Vogue deliberately shifted this ad set to March for a higher page count because it doesn't appear in their current issue.

I was in Barnes & Noble yesterday. Elle was not on their shelfs.

I dunno, a supporting cast member (she's not playing one of the film's leads, she's billed 6th) getting a major cover to promote a small indie film 2 months before it premieres at a somewhat lesser film festival and presumably many months before it's regular release date feels unprecedented. Likely, Kaia got the cover for reasons totally unrelated to the film.

Anyways, I'm kind of rooting for the shift away from the formula of every cover going to a popular actress/singer with a film/album out that month. It used to be so predictable. I know it's still all promotion and PR but it feels less transactional when a coverstar isn't just trying to get you to buy this one specific thing, like a movie ticket or album. As far as I know, Elle, Bazaar, and Vogue all have cover stars this month who don't have new projects out in the month they'll be on newstands.

Oops, seeing it again now, the Wetherell ed isn't as I described lol. But a day or so after having flipped through it, in my mind's eye it was all studio blandness.

That shot of Kaia with her hand for the camera is inexcusably bad. Why on Earth was it published???

Love this shot. The only strong, gorgeous and memorable one of the entire issue, sadly.

In better days past, this would have been a cover foldout from Emmanuelle’s Vogue: Cheeky, provocative, naughty and so sexy. And the rest of the story would have been as carefree and unapologetically titillating. (...And Tyra would demand her to arch her back even more.) But we’re not in better days.

^^^ LOL And still leagues upon leagues a better shot than anything else in the issue. Or any current Vogue France flyers.

(And LOL at a classic Playboy/Sports Illustrated/Lui pose is now is seen as twerking. Gross.)
