US Harper's Bazaar June/July 2018 : Bella Hadid by Solve Sunbsbo

These editorials are laughable. Out of Africa. Ground-breaking concept executed in a way which more closely resembles the benign, say nothing, eye-glaze inducing editorials produced by the likes of The Edit or Porter. The infection is spreading. Nick Barose is one of the most forgettable make-up artists around. I remember seeing his work in ELLE over 10 years ago and wanting to scrape the pounds of make up off the models face. This terribly tacky, not to mention tired beauty gimmick proves it. Oh and Bella by Gigi

Bella's shoot looks like a hodge-podge of poorly stitched together moodboard images rather than a full fledged, fleshed out shoot. A bit of Avedon, Hiro, Sokolosky, Laetitia Crahay in Chanel, Natalie Portman for Miss Dior. There's nothing tying all of these various influences, looks or images together into a cohesive editorial with it's own message or vision for today.

Nothing interesting. I'm just happy to see Mélodie Monrose's name here.

I had enough of them. Nothing against them but c'mon this is ridiculous

Eyes wide open is strange, but I like it! It’s pretty cool. The Incredible’s editorial is joke, no effort at all. They just copy and pasted her onto the pictures. Bazaar is usually very creative and fun when they feature characters from movies, this is not one of those times. Karmen and Alana’s editorials are Bazaar on autopilot, it’s the same stories we’ve seen many times. Don’t even get me started on Bella, I’ve seen mannequins with more expression!

Flipping through this issue, there's a shot of Bella in a pink dress with hair flowing which would've made a perfect cover for them. I think it's before the index page. And she looks much more old-school supermodel in the opening editorial shot. That's it. The rest of the content is simply uneventful.

^This must be the shot you're talking about, right?

Must admit that I do like the look of everything here, and considering how long Glenda Bailey's endorsed the likes of Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, I'm surprised it has taken Bella so long to land the cover of American Harper's Bazaar. The newsstand cover feels like an updated version of the iconic Richard Avedon cover from 1965. Not to mention how the opening editorial shot from #35 totally evokes Avedon's aesthetic.

Yes, that's the one! I really think it would be a great cover for them. But alas.
Also agree re that opening shot.......

I think Karl was the link between Kendall and Gigi's entry into US Bazaar. He's the one who shot their debut edits for the magazine, and Glenda is mad about him as well. I'm highly convinced that their covers sold well for the magazine. Glenda is known to fixate only on faces who sell. Bella may have gotten hers because of Dior and it will be interesting to see how she'll perform on a dual month.

Glenda deserves most of the criticism thrown at her but she did give non-Insta models their chance. Anna Ewers on newsstand while Kendall was on subscribers, Daria, Lara, Kate.....

Definitely see what you mean about that shot making a terrific cover for American Harper's Bazaar! They should've used it as the subscribers cover image because that bland black and white one does nothing for me. The newsstand cover (per usual with US Bazaar) is definitely the better alternative.
