it is! :innocent:

the only SI girls i liked this year were Anne V , mallory and a few others....

Natalia is like 22 right? and KK 21? is this another Wintour lie? KK looks really 25-27, totally! She looks older compare to the other girls. KK looks like just as old as Gran'ma Kass.

Take a look at Valentina. She was touted as the most beautiful of them all. I like her already!

I agree that KK looks older than her age. Of course I don't mean that she has wrinkles or anything. But her features are very mature looking (like Carmen), kind of sharp, rather than the softer features of other young models like Natalia. She looks late 20s to me, but very very beautiful of course! :) :flower:

when KK got big circa 99/2000, there was quite a bit of talk that she was not "15" as her current "21" would make her, but actually 18 or 19 or 20 and had been modelling unsuccessfully [brunette] for several years. I even saw a few pictures that looked very different from the way we came to know her. :woot:
while VF calls her 21 I totally agree shes older & I guessed at least 24 in my summary, but she could well be 26 like carmen.
Then again, wasnt she a basketball player in high school? VF says that...I suppose her high school dates would be a more accurate record?
anyway i dont really care I never liked KK, EVER! and I still dont....
:ninja:

all of these girls blow the sports illustrated/brasilian girls away.
the only brasil models i really like are jeisa, raquel & ana claudia & sports illustrated doesnt use that level of girl.
demarchelier shot a high fashion style edit its so much better than walter iooss or julie campbell in SI.

You cant compare the Swimsuit Sports Illustrated with this VAnity Fair Shoot. Sports Illustrated Swimsuit its OBVIOUSLY made for the masculine public, its not fashion orientated at all. I have not even saw it the inside of Vanity Fair. But Demarchelier shot it right? So this for start...

Plus SIS mostly used Brazilian commercial models - apart from Michelle Alves - that girl rocks everything she does - commercial stuff, editorials, runway !

I dont know why this Brazilian X Europeans . I have favorite models from all over ;)

I had this picture of Karolina, presumably from her early EARLY days of modeling, where she had this poofy brown hair, bushy eyebrows and a bigger nose. I no longer have it, because I frankly thought it was an awful photo of her, but could this be the photo you guys are talking about? I'm starting to get the idea that Ana Wintour picked Karolina to be the next supermodel, reduced her age and made her "the youngest model to make it onthe cover of Vogue" to create hype around her.

KK the plastic surgery queen? It's kinda scary how somoeone(Wintour) would do that to make others believe that she is the new topmodel...

Kk

 agreed I saw a few gross pics of KK where she was a brunette and these were supposedly her early modelling pics way before 1999.
she was brunette & also her face looked different so Ive always thought wintour totally made KK over & decided top make her famous.
I never liked KK & only ever liked 1 or 2 swim edits she had in vogue.

I agree that VF & SI are in different types of models: high fashion vs commercial. but few of the SI girls impressed me this year, only jessica van der steen, marisa miller and a few of the carolyn murphy & anne V.
 im saying I far prefer the VF girls & demarch's photo style to the SI cheesecake pinup style.

Why did they put Carmen Kass on the cover? She looks so bland between Karolina and Natalia. Marija would have been a nice contrast with her dark hair.

"KK looks forced on the cover...like she's trying to prove something (that VS model pose is annoying)"

how in the world is karolina's pose any more VS than natalia's?? i think that you just have something against KK for becoming so commercially successful, or no offense at all, but it's like you have to try and put her down because she's no longer right for the "high fashion" snobs. check out old photos of KK when she was just starting, she has always held her hand on her hip like that and from the very first time she turned on the runway, has arched her back that way.

I think you've stumbled onto something. Natalia doesn't get as recognized on the redcarpet or get invited to talk shows. Karolina is probably the only working model besides Gisele (and the other VS girls) that actually get recognized and are known by name. Natalia isn't. She may be doing more "high fashion", but it certainly doesn't help her get noticed her in the U.S.

Really too much KK hate here. I have no idea why you everyone has to either love-Nat & hate-KK, or love-KK & hate-nat.

Personally I love KK just because she's a unique beauty and she's what I consider to be one of the best looking models. She may have went a little commercial, but she rocked the industry when she first arrived. And I also like Nat. No hate for her. I mean I can argue against career choices they've both made. Nat doing exclusive contracts and Karolina doing commercial.

i think what bothers people so much is that the "high fashion" clique is extremely exclusive, and really an underground culture, since very few of the names of prominent fashion folk are heard in the popular culture. its very similar to underground music bands, in that when an indie rock band, for example, suddenly signs on with Nike, or MacDonalds, they are viewed to have "sold out" and then people turn against them.

i've often wondered why that happens and why people don't instead say, "wow. that's awesome that they just scored millions of dollars to sell a song to Nike." i think the answer comes in the fans themselves. when you are part of an underground culture, there is a very specific exclusivity about your nature that you WANT to maintain. you don't like the commercial things because that goes against this idea that you are IN on something underground and cool. something that only a few lucky people get to be in on.

the world of high fashion is absolutely no different. people love Commes des Garcons because the designers refuse to go mainstream. there is a certain respect that comes with just doing it for the art. and that is absolutely understandable. lady_grey, you mentioned that you have never liked KK, so you are not included in what i'm about to say, but i really think that there are alot of people who really liked KK when she first came out, but who felt betrayed by her in some way when she did more commercial projects like VS. this is why there is so much anti-gisele threads as well. its like a slap in the face for you to have placed these models at the top of your sub-culture and then have them toss it out the door for more money/fame/recognition, etc.

all of that aside though. i really think that KK is a great model. when she first hit the runways, she was the hottest thing since sliced bread. she has a fantastic walk and when she is moving down the runway, all eyes are on her, because there is something about her that is simply captivating. that is why all the commercial markets recognize her and try to get her for their projects. and she excels there as well. look at her in the Victoria's Secret catalogue, or on their runway. she stands out. she is magnificent. and her personality is so exuberant, why wouldn't she want to do different things and different experiences?

i understand why people feel like she and gisele have sold out. i can understand why you wouldn't like her anymore because of that. but think of all the great SUPERmodels that we all idolize:
Cindy, Naomi, Christy, Linda, Kate, etc etc. These models are our favourites because we've had the chance to see their personalities. they've all done commercial things. Naomi released a music album. Cindy has done countless swimsuit ads, etc. But they are so adored because they are REAL. We've been able to witness their trials and tribulations and they've become like real people instead of just a doll-like face on the runway. What interest can a 16 year old child have for a grown adult? Just her pretty face? But what's beyond that? Where's the personality? the growth? the ego? the fire? determination? resiliance? etc etc.

i say we should honour the models like Karolina and Gisele because they are the closest thing that we have to those models of yesterday that everyone so deeply adores.

does no one agree?? or at least disagree? that's it, no comment? LOL. i practically wrote an essay, it just feels sort of pointless if no one responds in some way to it.
