US Vogue August 2023 : Olivia Rodrigo by Théo de Gueltzl

For me, where this shoot falls flat most is hair and makeup. She should have done something daring and transformative. The clothes as well do not match the set. They are quite 60's Factory Girl/Edie Sedgwick and the set is very 50's LA movie set.. Like something we'd see in an Arthur Elgort/Grace Coddington shoot.

I'm also stunned to see Emporio Armani on a Vogue cover. Kudos to Alex Harrington for making it look like LV/Paco/Chanel. I hope Conde got a sweet deal for that credit.

Vogue used to be known for amazing starlet cover debuts and now they are so flat.

Rolling Stone did it better.
Vogue is always a bit late to the party.
Olivia should get the cover 2 years ago while she was becoming the internet music sensation - now it's just like an afterthought and promo for the new album. Lame Duck.

I wonder what is the target age for Vogue reader now? I do love Olivia (I think her 1st album is fantastic and can't wait for her 2nd album), but this cover down to the styling of the ed feels very Teen Vogue. I remember back then even when they have young stars on the covers, they still styled them in a sort of classy grown up way (Taylor Swift and Keira Knightey 1st cover comes to mind). This however feels very... juvenile.

But if they are targeting younger demographics now, there is a little bit disconnect with the contents inside. The Caroline Wozniacki article and ed in this issue feels like the old Vogue when they are still targeting mature woman.

Or maybe they are doing this to bump up subscription (and social media engagement) numbers from Gen Z who buy magazines only for looking at the pictures of their fave singers and don't bother reading the articles inside?

Time changes. If I'm not wrong all the editors agree five years ago to not put underage models and stars on the covers.

20 isn’t under age? Unless you mean drinking age in the United Stares.

My head, huuh. I was saying that they agree to not putting very young people after the shocking news about Mario and Weber. Somehow, even if Anna respect that rule (Edward kinda broke it) a girl like Olivia looks younger than she is, I see a 15 year old girl here, not 20. They should apply their own rules to the aesthetic as well.

Do you really think Vogue is going to get BETTER without Anna in 2023?!?!? I'm not an Anna defender, but lmao... come on.

No, but it's a pretty good d*** start ahahahah especially if you take away:
- Anna
- Inclusivity madness
- Quotas
- Influencers and all of that s***.

Then, yeah ahahah YESSS Vogue can become something else. It was working for 130 years or so, so I guess the formula wasn't bad.

What kills me is this necessity Anna has to put completely boring nobodies on the cover and inside.
I also deplore the inclusivity rule that makes all the creativity secondary and so on.

As a person of color YES I want to see more actors, singers and models to be represented but ONLY WHEN it makes sense too. Anna is the same as Disney or Hollywood producers when there are REAL quotas where we should have that % of women, black, asian, gay, etc. people in magazines / in movies and in tv series. I can of course watch a movie with only white or asian people and feel very well. I hate with a passion this ''woke'' movement.

People just need BASIC EDUCATION and kindness and brains instead of being spoon-fed all the minorities in every single project. I watch many japanese and korean tv shows and I can still relate to them or the actors without having to be asian myself.

Let's be real, racism isn't going to vanish JUST BECAUSE we have more inclusivity in fashion or elsewhere. We need a better education AT HOME and AT SCHOOL, the rest is propaganda.

Vogue isn't a better magazine or a more sellable magazine when we have more % of minorities.
The same goes with influencers. It has been proven, therefore Anna is just clowning around these days.

THEREFORE YES when Anna gets fired or leaves or whatever the option will be, I assume Vogue to be different IF AND ONLY IF we also take away the quotas and all of that s***.

So the media play now is that this is historic since she's the first Filipino-American on the cover of US Vogue. But with how magazines are shifting heavily toward inclusivity, every month has is first for anything.

Good for her, but a non-event for me especially with how they're shifting towards the regionalization of Vogue.

Chloe Magno made more history for me. The first Filipino under the Vogue masthead (though I remember someone else was first -- or am I mistaken?)

They’re saying that? Oh god…

None of these looks are good btw.

Can we discuss how they just shoot full runway looks - which used to just be reserved for HC. Mags are so broke they probably sold every one of these looks to the highest bidder.

those DEI quotas come from the bankers sweetheart. Conde nast isnt getting loans unless they do what the bankers tell them to do.

All of this is just so... abysmal. To me, this is the level of bad that was the Dua Lipa cover from June/July 2022. A total non-event, and does indeed feel like Vogue and Anna Wintour is late to the Olivia Rodrigo party (if there even is one). A hard HARD pass from me.

Regarding the first Filipina on the cover of Vogue (worldwide), Olivia was featured on Vogue Singapore's cover for its Issue #9 before Chloe Magno's Vogue Korea cover last year, so technically, it's still Olivia who gets on the cover of Vogue first. And yes @Kimy Jo, it's a nationwide news since yesterday. :tearsofjoy:

I wish they could go back to having excessive blurbs on their covers because their current layout does not do anything to me. It just looks like a subscription special. It doesn't feel like Vogue US. Their Summer cover would have been a lot better if they went back to their old layout.

The cover sucks. It’s a snooze fest.

The cover was decent but the expression os off. Th eeditorial is giving Teen Vogue.

This low energy, AI generated editorial, why are they putting these clothes on twenty-year-olds? They could have had Caroline Trentini behind the camera and also telling Olivia how high to jump and it would have been more memorable. Of all the ideas they could have done for a zoomer star and her audience, they did something no one is going to remember three months from now.

The choice of Olivia Rodrigo is slightly weird, seeing as this album is only her sophomore one and despite the success of her "Sour", she is not quite as critically acclaimed as the other musicians who have been on Vogue's cover before. Not to mention that the cover itself is kind of boring. I'm agreeing with the sentiments of a few posters, this cover and Olivia herself belongs on Teen Vogue.
