US Vogue August 2023 : Olivia Rodrigo by Théo de Gueltzl

this is terrible, and a real waste of a cover star who actually has a strong sense of personal style+ capacity to be interesting in photographs, not to mention is popular among Gen Z - and this bullsh*t is the result? What is up with US Vogue's covers? I thought the Jung Hoyeon one last February was bad but this is a close second.

the entire cover+shoot feels so lazy, like a girl blogger in the 00s could take better photographs than these with a self-timer on a Nikon D90 and put together better outfits too.

Anna Wintour needs to retire asap

it’s been years.

off topic:

I do must say that Anna has surprised me with some of her covers in the last couple of years either by it’s production, cover choices or both.
what I can’t get past is how the paper quality has decreased - I grabbed Karl’s tribute cover and it looked terrible. went back to the shelf.

now that Edward was promoted to whatever, who could replace Ms. Wintour? I’d love Tonne Goodman to be considered.

I don't get why her age or young look is such a big deal. She is 20 and the ed couldn't be any more inoffensive.
I hate how infantile the whole thing is. The styling is abysmal.

Heard a couple of her song. Way better as a thought. The girl can rock. I see something from the Go Go's in her but modern.

Maybe because we want mature style from Vogue, because IS Vogue. They used to have their magazine for teens, but vanished in this CN cutting madness. Loyal readers of Vogue from years and years, with good taste, don't see what they want here. They don't recognize Vogue. I read @justaguy and @vogue28 and they always have the best word/opinion here. I trust more in them than some guy that bought Vogue once or twice in their life or want Vogue to reflect the hype of today no matter if it left fashion behind. If you want to reflect the people of today and you're making a fashion magazine, stick with fashion. Don't forget your identity. Anyway, I hope Olivia gets a better cover story the next time.

The choice of Olivia Rodrigo is slightly weird, seeing as this album is only her sophomore one and despite the success of her "Sour", she is not quite as critically acclaimed as the other musicians who have been on Vogue's cover before.

Don't care for/about this cover, but at some point they just can't win. Some are suggesting Olivia isn't solidified enough as a major star to have earned a cover, others in this thread are saying the moment has passed and she should've had one for Sour. Some are saying she's too young (I agree the styling is semi-infantilizing but have no issue with an accomplished 20 year old nabbing a cover) while others are, again, saying she should've gotten one a few years back when she was barely 18.People complain about Anna putting her established favs on repeat covers, but then a newbie who's not so overexposed scores a cover and it's all "who??"

Anyway, sadly the Vogue of decades past isn't coming back anytime soon. The real tragedy is no other title is picking up the slack. Far from it. They're both failing to deliver in print AND failing to deliver successful, engaging online content. And it's not just magazines. Ad campaigns are routinely underwhelming, the offerings in stores leave me uninspired, rarely finish watching a runway show these days. All around, a flop era for the industry/art of fashion. I was never an insider, but the way fashion has become such a part of lowest-common-denominator culture is making me lose some interest too, as pretentious as that may sound. Joe Schmo ranking their most desired designer bags for millions of tiktok viewers, people with zero taste and knowledge sounding off on the latest *insert brand* show. I dunno, it's just played out.

Not sure if you haven't noticed already but Anna and conde don't give a flying f*ck.

I still don't get why you have an issue with her age. If they featured a 15 year old girl but styled her to look like a 30 it would be fine for you?

She is 20 but styled as a 15 year. It's so hard for you or Blueorchid to understand? I'm trying so hard to say it. I always thought and I don't remember If I said it here time ago, that I think a fashion magazine oriented to adult women from the day one is not good for under age girls because they have a different body, a different mind, and are so sensitive about the impact of image and self esteem. Maybe you're trying to say time changes because magazines are more open to show bodies from any type. If that's your word, well, I agree with you that now Vogue has less negative impact in teens as it had decades ago with the imposition to be thin and blonde and they are a positive influence in very young girls. But well, I don't care to see a girl with 20 year portrayed as a kid in a magazine oriented for adults. Also I don't care the Political Correction Police here (we know who they are, I saw their names all the time in the likes) and social media with their impositions and I say whatever I want in the way I can. I won't change my mind after this at all. If you want to cancel me, go ahead. I'm so stupid and evil, I deserve your hate.

I’m just going to say this and leave it at that… I work with teenagers and she isn’t styled to look like one. 20 year olds are women, not girls. As a woman who did consume teen magazines as a teen… the contents of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar were probably less “harmful” than teen magazines at the time (maybe Sassy was better? But that’s way before my time.). I can confidently practically guarantee very few 15 year olds are likely buying Vogue anyway, just a crazy feeling.

I don’t think you’re stupid or evil for having a different opinion. Get a grip.

I feel like shes from the same category as Alicia Vikander and Kendall Jenner who deliver on their social media than on covers.

The cover story is bland & weak, too Teen Vogue's style this edit. I don't know how could be the other features on this issue.

That's a reprint from... some other edition that I looked at recently, because I remember that shot of her at the newsstand.

EDIT: It's appeared in the Lauren Hutton Vogue Germany Jul/Aug issue.

I don't believe the character Anok is playing...there is something missing...and a poor photo editing.

That Anok ed is ridiculous. Looks like an instagram feed of a random influencer.
