US Vogue June 2005 : Salma Hayek by Mario Testino

i don't like this cover, it looks so.....well, old.....i don't know. doesn't look very fresh, neither very stylish....

I flipped through this issue yesterday and I agree with whoever said Gemma is in every issue of US Vogue. I like Gemma but it's getting to be overkill.

Nevertheless, that meisel edit made up for it. I loved the girls that they used and love that they used Diana (one of my favs). Plus it was just beautifully done.

Slightly OT: Kimair, I'm also a fan of the Stegner H&M bikini ad. She looks fantastic. There's a huge billboard of it near the Lincoln Tunnel, NY.

I actually like the cover, I almost never like US Vogue cover but this one is more tasteful than they usually are.

Absolutly!

This month cover war b/t Vogue and Bazaar goes to Bazaar.

This Vogue cover is hideous.
There is absolutly no spark to it.
Completely bland.
The turq. and white does not work for me.

They could have utilized Selma much more,by using some of her Latin flair.

The only thing I think they did well - was covering her breasts.

the whole latin flair is getting old.:ermm:

i think the cover resembles 1910's mexico, in the times of revolution, whoever designed the cover was quite aware of history and the whole situation back then, the colours, the horse, the light..even the dress, there's a clear reminiscence of that time, i think it's beautiful. i'm so glad they didnt pushed up her boobs and wrapped her in a red dress because it's latin june.

*So we agree to disagree!

Latin flair can mean many of things.

Wrapping her in a red dress would such a cliche- and even more boring.

As for it resembling 1910 Mexican Revolution- is it because of the horse  . The white background and turq coloring does not shout out class war.

Please enlighten me so I may understand how you came to such a conclusion.:flower:

i didnt say it was because of the horse. if you'd take with a pinch of salt our little disagreements you might want to read again my post and see that's not what i meant.

just for the record, i neither said it was 'class war', just because it was the revolution doesnt that's the look of a warrior or whatever. it'd be so much to explain, toohipforbrooklyn might even put it better but during those times there were a type of ranches called 'haciendas', you might want to google that also. some those ranches were owned by very strong women. which, is the look that salma is portraying in the cover. ;)

could someone please repost the cover pic? i'd love to see what y'all are talking about.

Further Editorial Comments Re June 2005 Us Vogue:

FURTHER EDITORIAL COMMENTS RE JUNE 2005 US VOGUE:
TRAVEL ISSUE: "GETAWAYS/WARM-WEATHER STYLE"

BEST EDIT #1:
Gemma shot by Arthur Elgort in Louisiana. Elgort is probably US Vogue's most consistent photog and these pictures are gorgeous country landscapes in La.
Gemma is pretty & the clothes styled by Grace C are excellent. Somehow last month's Testino gemma LA story was a little harder hitting but in a softer summery way this too is a beautiful edit. in a different way it's just as great, & attests to gemma & elgort's notable skills.
marks elgort's 30th consecutive year shooting for vogue. elgort and grace are the best photog-stylist duo month in month out us vogue. [by comparison meisel is far more inconsist6ent with grace or tonne]. gorgeous gemma, landscapes & looks incl: burberry- prada [cute!]- ysl [love it!!]- LV twice [wow on the organza/tulle skirt!]- chanel- D&G- kawakubo. rating 8 of 10.

BEST EDIT #2: meisel has several studio set pieces scattered throughout the issue styled by tonne goodman & including models: marija- diana d- doutzen- hana- gemma- eugenia- lily - cameron- trentini - while elaborate these are among the better us vogue pics meisel has shot in 2005. all the girls are great as is the makeup & tonne's styling. theres a cameron bikini bottom pic page 206 [BEST BIKINI IN ISSUE #2] with trentini which is my fave story pic in this issue. cameron is a spectacular healthy bodied bikini model & we've got to see more of her/that. the 'seville/huntress' [216-219] pages are the best thematically but tonne & meisel really worked well with all these superstar models here & its the most ambitious, wide-ranging part of the june vogue, which delivers more strongly than a lot of meisel's sometimes spotty us vogue work the last year or 2. really good work for us vogue by meisel tonne & these great girls. rating 8 of 10.

edit #3: india hicks and david flint-wood in harbour island bahamas home. very nice resort story, very ralph lauren but again halard is a dynamite travel photog and these pics are excellent. rating 7 of 10. hamish edited he knows his stuff. sharp shopping too incl. light blue lacoste; petit beateay marinier; prada dress. pg 203.

edit #4: heather shot by ray meier. pg 228. nice nautical story but this time meier, heather & editor santisi just come up short next to power-houses like elgort, meisel, gemma & cameron in this ish. nice blues though its not bad. rating 6 of 10.

edit #5: jane mayle in bhutan shot by halard. he's an excellent travel photog and this is nice. rating 6 of 10.
* celerie kemble also honeymooned in bhutan interestingly enough. pg 136.

Edit #6/Cover: salma hayek by testino. another actress on the beach riding a horse story. clean outdoors snaps by testino but this story is sleepy and I dont think much of the cover composition other than the contrast of white & light blue. by comparison bazaar's renee z story & even cover are better even though testino is a far more talented photog than his protege lubomirski. camilla nickerson's styling is good & salma is ok but equally just 'another actress coverstory' and just because its better than J Lo by testino iosnt saying much. best looks prada [great dress] lanvin, LV, narciso. rating 5.5 of 10.

BEST BIKINI #3: theres another daria bikini pic by testino, in valentino, last months was even hotter, but i hope we will eventually see the full daria/terstino swim edit.
while daria's belly piercing and fake tan are poss. questionable, her slim physique & slim cameltoe in this val number are oddly alluring, and quite sexy. pg 139.

COLUMNS/EDITORS:
BILLY=GOOD: pg 78 ''billy norwich note's" one of billy's best, and most practical, 'notes' yet- what gifts to give your hosts on a summer weekend holiday: Marimekko beah towels , Mistral soaps, Teuscher truffles.
* or if youre karolina k, cook potato pancakes. czech supermodel specialty, I'm seriousl!
** also what NOT to wear- a tracksuit.

*** BILLY=BAD. whoops. billy back to his airhead non-news style with celerie kemble/boykin curry's PB wedding pg. 130. Is it just me or does billy harbour utter revulsion for this wedding event & party? cute details nonetheless:
* Donald & Melania were denied fireworks- but Celerie's wedding got them in PB!!
** abba act bjorn again performed cool!!
*** miami's dj irie spun all night!
**** the menu incl. palm beach cheese puffs, steamed artichokes & BBQ short ribs [ouch!!].

SALLY SINGER-VOGUE VIEW: FALL PREVIEW:
* elise at rochas. pg 83.
* dewi at oscar, marija at dk; gemma & lily @ chanel; page 84.
* daria at narciso; gemma at ck pg 86.
* diana at lanvin - her ascendance to the top 5 or so models is very welcome- diana has the beauty, power & sexuality that others claim cindy crawford packed, but never did to me. diana is sophisticated & extremely sexy, and getting better every day.
* gemma at marc & lv; raquel at balenciaga pg 88.
* poly at tuleh & mouret; daria at prouenza pg 90.

VALERIE STEIKER: PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT:
* pg 111: marat safin in armani work shirt & margiela white trous. as you know tennis is one of my favourite aesthetics and sports and it's great to see safin here, photo by jeff lipsky, interview by dodie. looking forward to more maria sharapova edits in vogue. the june W also was heavy into the tennis including ralph lauren's new us open 2005 line/license; and more importantly, tom ford's love of vintage 70s tennis shorts. you may know i rock the 70s fila, jimmy connors and fred perry tennis shorts all summer. Tom = super hottie.

** 'alex katz in maine' incl. 2 rare early katz' - 'canoe' 1974 & 1961 'ada & vincent' - WOW!! super early super-cartoony katz! cool! pg 127.

BEST DRESSED SOCIALS/ALEX KOTUR:
"Girl of the moment' samantha boardman in CH, gucci, chanel, valentino & D&G pg. 73. sam is also spotted at celerie kemble's wedding pg 130-36.

* aerin lauder in oscar pg. 74.

* pg 78 sally albemarle in val; renee rockefeller in chanel.

* lady gabriella windsor in an issa print pg. 106.

SMART SHOPPING/MEREDITH BURKE:
pg 196 Hermes pencils & watch; missoni bikini; prada shades.
* eres braid trim bikini; smythson notebooks; oliver peoples shades; page 213.
** INDEX : Sapone per cucina vegetal soaps pg 238. ; mrs john l . strong card sets pg 239.
*** LAST LOOK Prada rose print carry-on. $1,825.

RETRO FABULOUS: 1956: 'nostalgia' page 50, 1956 karen radkai vogue airport image with big red wood coat. gotta love the 50s photography! this radkai image can stand with any by elgort or meisel in this issue. LOVE the retro vogue photos!

** 1980: also like Sally Singer's allusion to YSL tulip skirt- first seen in 1980 [pic by Horst] and now in 2005 by ysl polda dots & lanvin pg. 101.

LETTERS/ASTROLOGY: liz gertsch's letter on page 64 bemoans the death & absence of athena starwoman. i can onl7y agree and as k that vogue please give us an astrology column soon. oddly enough the STAR tabloid is STILl running athena week to week!! oh these astrologers they ARE tapping into a higher power!!!

HOT ADS:
Hottest ad: theres an H&M swim pull out with 2 julia stegner bikinis & one of them is by far the hottest image in this issue. julia blows away every other model alive except caroline winberg on her best day & you have got to see julia in blue tiny bikini [BEST BIKINI IN ISSUE #1} & see the most beautiful model of the 21st century.
* diana dondoe & jessy miller also look GREAT in these H&M swim suits but julia is simply my favourite model of thye century & her swim body is untouchable.

Jessica Miller for the Gap. As much as Gap & maybe juicy are 2 of my most hated labels in the world, Jessy Miller looks so beautiful in the new gap & H&M ads. does this mean she's coming back? or that her career is almost over? I dunno but I like my Jessy!!

Filippa for ralph, i hate the new 'big polo pony' it looks like a tarantula is crawling on her shoulder- but filippa is such an amzing blue eyes healthy scandfinavian that i dont care. she hot.
* filippa also in another ralph ad, the 'romance' frgrance. bruce weber shoots these right? his images of filippa are breathtaking. Id like to see lonneke and liisa winkler return to polo ads, they were equally goddess-like.

Prada with diana dondoe. this brill spring campaign rolls on. LOVE the green/yellow tipped/striped polo & the purple hat/shades & yellow necklace & watch combos. and youre telling me some people dont understand miuccia's genius at combining colors & pioeces? get serious!!

NOT HOT ADS: Kors. I like michael kors designs. molly sims' paisley blouse here is way cool. but his ads are so blantantly 80s Polo ripoffs that I think his label appears ridiculous, piddling-wanna-be's instead of the 'upper class high life' he's trying to show. also, ralph was able to convincingly show heterosexual couples in his ads. look at the male model & his style in these kors pages- this guy, something of a stand-in for kkors himself, is obviously gay as connoted by his clothes/style, why is kors presenting him as molly sims 'mate'?? this is a ridiculous conceit and kors, as much as I like many of his designs, appears foolish in his imaging/branding. needs work.

VERDICT: ONE THUMBS UP this is a strong travel issue with several top models & fine photography especially by meisel elgort & halard. the shopping scattered throughout is great too- is meredith burke editing ALL the shopping picks? if so she deserves a big bonus as do grace, elgort, halard, tonne and hamish for their monthly exceptional work & taste. also sally singer, alex kotur & even billy norwich delivered better than usual this month this month. see? I DO have nice things to say!
BUY IT for the beach!!

Wait... this is supposed to be a fashion magazine? Hmm... could have fooled me.

Same thing i thought and i also love the fact that they have never done this before. About looking dull i guess it looks different in person than on the net

i guess i'm going to have to wait until it comes inthe mail because i can't see the pic....oh well.

When I got my Vogue in the mail....I thought....nice cover...very soft and subtle. I like that. Still too much text on the cover...they should think about reducing the text...it takes away from the picture.

Whenever anyone finds any scans, please post. I'm looking forward to seeing Cameron and Diana's US Vogue debuts.

Or maybe they should try focusing the text on more fashion-related topics. Half the time I'm not sure if US Vogue is supposed to be a fashion magazine or a lifestyle magazine. I get the French and Italian Vogue too, and I must say they put US Vogue to shame.

i posted in more detail in the "salma hayek on us vogue" forum, but:

i don't understand the problem people have with actors being on the cover instead of models. i think eightyeightkeys is RIGHT - us vogue is more of a lifestyle magazine, and articles about the rich and famous are going to get more attention from the average person than even the most beautifully shot editorials, especially if someone can look at the column beside the photo and see that the pants alone cost as much as a car.

because of their statistically unusual physical features, models probably can present the designer's vision in a more "true" way than an actor can. but without a famous face to wear the clothing to the oscars, who will know of the designer? who had heard of narciso rodriguez until carolyn bessette got married in his dress? well, maybe YOU had :flower: - but josephine average who buys vogue on her way out of safeway hadn't.

and have you been to the mall lately? it's all sports logos, designer knockoff accessories, jeans, tshirts and ill-fitting undergarments, but we are taught to idolize the rich; so josephine average might buy vogue, but more to see what the rich are up to, not to dress like them and stand out in clothing no one else can relate to.

i guess i see this as part of a general dumbing down of america, not specific to the fashion industry. so i'm asking, what upsets people? -

1: actors and lifestyle (low culture) as opposed to art/fashion (high culture) dominating the content of vogue, or
2: models can do it better, and should be getting the jobs that actors are getting, or:
3: another issue.

sincerely wondering, meme

celebrity worship has reached epidemic proportions--over exposure! "america's monarchy" can be understandably sickening at times esp. represented on the pages of a fashion bible because they represent $$ over substance. i can see how it can be annoying. aside from that i personally don't really care if actors are stealing the jobs away from models--they are both idolized for ridiculous reasons (even though i have a weakness for bow-legged ms. moss)
