US Vogue June 2005 : Salma Hayek by Mario Testino

i guess i'm going to have to wait until it comes inthe mail because i can't see the pic....oh well.

When I got my Vogue in the mail....I thought....nice cover...very soft and subtle. I like that. Still too much text on the cover...they should think about reducing the text...it takes away from the picture.

Whenever anyone finds any scans, please post. I'm looking forward to seeing Cameron and Diana's US Vogue debuts.

Or maybe they should try focusing the text on more fashion-related topics. Half the time I'm not sure if US Vogue is supposed to be a fashion magazine or a lifestyle magazine. I get the French and Italian Vogue too, and I must say they put US Vogue to shame.

salma's face has been whitened up here, same as they did with jLo - that accounts for the distortion in her features.

personally, i think salma's beautiful, and not only that but she's a very smart cookie, an entrepreneur, a producer and a woman who makes things happen. yeah, sometimes her clothes are too tight, but she's hardly a the ditsy type . she's an actor, and a latina, but she's light years ahead of jLo in terms of artistry. she's not simply a vehicle for her own self-promotion, as witnessed by her work on (and in) "frida".

as far as actors being on the cover of vogue - in the US actors move magazines. no one who is not seriously interested in the industry knows the names of these models anymore - the days of cindy and naomi and claudia are gone. whether that is good or bad, or what that means, i don't know, except that ceclebrities, the very rich, and what they are doing is what motivates americans to buy magazines in the check out line and read them. i agree that models can usually "represent" the clothing better than actors, since most models are very thin and tall and long-legged. but other than wearing clothes and looking good, what do they do that will motivate josephine average to plunk down $5 for vogue?

that's my theory, anyway. i'd love to hear why people are so upset about actors on the cover, because i don't see anything wrong with it, if the cover is well shot and the actor does a good job (although i thought melania knauss was stretching it - must have been part of the nuptial negotiations).

i posted in more detail in the "salma hayek on us vogue" forum, but:

i don't understand the problem people have with actors being on the cover instead of models. i think eightyeightkeys is RIGHT - us vogue is more of a lifestyle magazine, and articles about the rich and famous are going to get more attention from the average person than even the most beautifully shot editorials, especially if someone can look at the column beside the photo and see that the pants alone cost as much as a car.

because of their statistically unusual physical features, models probably can present the designer's vision in a more "true" way than an actor can. but without a famous face to wear the clothing to the oscars, who will know of the designer? who had heard of narciso rodriguez until carolyn bessette got married in his dress? well, maybe YOU had :flower: - but josephine average who buys vogue on her way out of safeway hadn't.

and have you been to the mall lately? it's all sports logos, designer knockoff accessories, jeans, tshirts and ill-fitting undergarments, but we are taught to idolize the rich; so josephine average might buy vogue, but more to see what the rich are up to, not to dress like them and stand out in clothing no one else can relate to.

i guess i see this as part of a general dumbing down of america, not specific to the fashion industry. so i'm asking, what upsets people? -

1: actors and lifestyle (low culture) as opposed to art/fashion (high culture) dominating the content of vogue, or
2: models can do it better, and should be getting the jobs that actors are getting, or:
3: another issue.

sincerely wondering, meme

celebrity worship has reached epidemic proportions--over exposure! "america's monarchy" can be understandably sickening at times esp. represented on the pages of a fashion bible because they represent $$ over substance. i can see how it can be annoying. aside from that i personally don't really care if actors are stealing the jobs away from models--they are both idolized for ridiculous reasons (even though i have a weakness for bow-legged ms. moss)

Very well said! I personally prefer models to actresses because they inspire more fantasy. With actresses, you know they're just promoting a movie. Also, they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of these covers imho. I don't see Vogue as a lifestyle magazine, even though they have the stupid travel/power issue. Yes, they have Jeffrey Steingarten's food article and a home showcase every once in a while, but I view it as a fashion magazine. Hence, use some models!

If I want to see Jennifer Aniston, JLO, etc. on a cover, I'll buy US Weekly. Sorry such a major rant, but I'm 34 and have been reading Vouge since I was a teenager, I'm just tired of all of the celebrity worship just to sell a magazine. Phew, thanks for reading:flower:

Quick recap of June's Vogue, Bazaar, and W:

Mario Testino's editorial with Salma Hayek is rather uninspired:

To put it bluntly, a woman who is short and curvy like Salma Hayek is the antithesis of Vogue so I don't know what she's doing on the cover. The cover design (the full body shot, the blue lettering) was amateurish. If I didn't know it was for US Vogue, I would guess that it was a foreign edition that re-used US Vogue's celeb pictorial. I however do thank the stylist for covering Hayek up--after Cannes, I was in no mood to see more of her cleavage.

Editorials:

Steven Meisel shoots a variety of beauties: Eugenia (stunning in Gaultier couture), Doutzen (most amazing legs), Marija+Diana Dondoe+Cameron Russell (amazing girls who are overdue for their US Vogue debut), Gemma Ward, Lily Donaldson, and Caroline Trentini. I think the brown background is a bit too heavy for summer and some of the outfits seem downright bizaare (horse riding pants?), but the real tragedy here is that Meisel lost a chance to tell a coherent story with his pictures--the series is absurdly broken into pieces to accommodate Vogue's "contributing editors" (rolls eyes) who writing doesn't appear to have much relevance to Meisel's pictures.

Arthur Elgort shoots Gemma Ward in a cottage. There is simply no energy in these pictures and the selection of clothes is poor and random. Gemma looks ridiculously pale. Apparently the unhuman tan from her Testino UK Vogue story "Animal Magic" didn't last. ;)

Raymond Meier is this issue's saving grace as he shoots Heather Marks in the token accessories edit. Even though it is an accessories edit, the clothes have outshown the bags. My faves are Sophia Kokosalaki and Hermes:

But I gotta admit that Heather looks strangely Botox-y here. Her forehead glistens.

Any scans of India Hicks ?

O could anyone please scan the article and photos on India Hicks please ? I missed the June issue ! That would be so nice, thanks a lot already to whoever does it.

cheerio,
Dominique

i dotn see any sign of short or uninspired in her shot. i love the fact that they captured her in a different way from the one we are used to seeing and also mantained her self unlike what they did with jlo.
