Racialicious and a commenter at NYT Fashion Blog pretty much calls the ed out as:
Vogue's glorification of colonial racism (LINK).




I'll never subscribe to US Vogue...

Fashion is, by nature, elitist. It's all about exclusion. It plays with serious themes in a superficial manner.

This cover - as well as a recent series of 'tribal' editorials in UK Vogue - played on stereotypes of other cultures. Yes, they could have put more thought in, and come up with a new angle on the same old story, but it's Vogue - it exists to forcefeed us handbags and shoes, rather than act as a textbook for civil rights. I wasn't happy at the sight of these things either, but I know Vogue has no reason to have a conscience. It's an optional extra.

Well appreciated, only for a minute there I thought this was the JUNE 2008 thread, in which case I was quite excited about Keira being on the cover!
