Moss Grows "Wild"

Kate Moss, as you’ve never seen her before.
This year’s recipient of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s award for Fashion Influence continues to reinvent herself—all the while grabbing the attention of fashion’s jaded elite. Moss appears on the cover of V magazine’s new issue, themed “Wild,” in drag.
Shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Moss sports prominent facial hair—in reality, a fake beard purchased from a costume shop—as she models designs by an array of top designers, including Marc Jacobs, whose dress she dons for the cover. According to the photographers, they wanted to do something to shake things up. Inside the accompanying article, the editors of V write, “The beard should look fake, we agree. It should clearly be drag. Kate as the now-version of Hibiscus, star of the hippie documentary The Cockettes. Why do we associate a beard with deity, with spirit, with freedom, with magic? Can androgyny take us beyond ourselves? Could Kate’s desirability make us forget about war, money, power, and other catastrophes? I f***ing hope so.”
If you have questions regarding this attention-getting cover, V editor in chief Stephen Gan will be on hand tomorrow evening as he hosts a private exhibition of Algraphy drawings by Karl Lagerfeld, “Chanel: Then Now,” at the Visionaire Gallery in Soho. Among the guests expected are Mr. Lagerfeld himself, Lady Amanda Harlech, Yoko Ono, Anne McNally, and, unusually enough, Mariah Carey, who will be attending with Vogue’s André Leon Talley, all making for one heck of an eclectic evening.
I think I would probably still love her if that picture featured her with her arm raised to expose tufts of armpit hair . . . just because it would be so gutsy if she did!
