Vanity Fair April 2022 : Grimes by Steven Klein

I was about to go on to say this cover is the lowest point for both Steven Klein and Patti Wilson, which I both love. But I decided to go on their website to check on the editorial and was shocked that it's good. Nothing is groundbreaking or visionary, but at least it was decent. With such an elaborate editorial, they decided to use a photo that look like she was captured during the break.

I like the editorial, it has a story behind it, and not just some random photos of her being here and there. And there were some efforts to build the set to support the story, which is lacking these days with the blank background.

The fact that the worst photo was chosen as the cover, tells me more about the taste level of the EIC rather than the photographer or stylist.

Oh they've been lower than that cover, for sure. It's nice to see Klein back in his element, although this if much more fitting for a V Mag spread (cover star included). Regardless, it's a great editorial with an unfortunate cover image choice.

Yes! It’s indeed very V. I like it, but it doesn’t feel like Vanity Fair at all.

Would’ve loved seeing her getting the Testino or Leibovitz treatment. But those days are long gone unfortunately.

Is this Steven Klein’s first cover for Vanity Fair?

would’ve been cool in 2012, still within the reputation of her Halfaxa and Vanessa days, but now?.. too phony, media-starved, packed with plastic surgery, married to the standard corporate bully, generic danc-y s*it music and really buying into her own, bs ‘alien’ brand, she’s a cautionary tale of what happens when you’re talented but linger in LA for too long lol.

Also never been really interested in Klein’s work and this is just more of his saturated commercial junk.

I’ll love Grimes forever, and I don’t hate the shoot, but I expect more from Klein and this doesn’t work as a cover.

I don't feel like ANY magazine feels like itself anymore. :(

All the neon lighting effects cannot distract from just how flat the cover shoot is. Shots taken from a videogame would have more depth, because at least the lighting would be consistent throughout the scene, rather than the foreground looking like a bad cut-and-paste job onto the backdrop.

If I saw this shoot in a local magazine, I'd be very impressed with what young emerging talent did with meagre resources. But when you tell me that it's Steven Klein for Vanity Fair, these people are supposed to be at the top of their game.

When is this coming out? I haven't even read/recycled the previous issue yet. Newsstand.co.uk says 25/03/22.

I like the editorial, the cover not so much but this is a random choice

I hate to admit it, but "The Succession Scandal at Scholastic" line caught my eye more than the actual cover itself.
