Donatella Versace One-Ups Jet Li at Beijing Fashion Benefit
Donatella Versace and Jet Li came together for a Sichuan benefit last night in Beijing. It began with a fashion show, which Ms. Versace, the fashion designer, promised was grander than her show in Milan, followed by a short video of her trip to the earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan with Mr. Li, the action movie star. There, children recovering from the massive earthquake in May put on dances and their own fashion show in honor of their guest from Italy.

Ms. Versace and Mr. Li have partnered up to raise money for building trauma centers for the
children in the western province, which is still being rebuilt. The two held their show at the
Legation Quarter in Beijing near Tiananmen Square. In a charity auction afterward, attendees bid on clothes from the show, a watch specially designed with a logo to honor Mr. Li’s charitable foundation, the One Foundation, and trips to Hollywood and Milan to hang out with the hosts among other things.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the crowd seemed very fashion-focused. Despite Mr. Li’s celebrity in China, the money he raised offering a day spent with him on a movie set in Hollywood went for only 160,000 yuan, after Ms. Versace bid 150,000 yuan herself to raise the stakes after an awkward silence. In contrast, the watch went for 300,000 yuan and bids for a trip to Milan to be behind the scenes with Ms. Versace and Versace-designed tableware were all higher.
By the end of the night, 690,000 yuan was raised for Sichuan — a good night overall, but perhaps a little disappointing for the martial arts actor.

second-biggest market by revenue and investment in 2009.
