Viktor & Rolf Monsieur S/S 2006

I like the quilted little collar shirt, but the pink msr. sweatshirt looks like a university sweatshirt

i like the shorts. some if it's really nice...some a bit too preppy for my liking..

Isn't that the irony of their collection? Preppy Europeans? I'm actually asking. I mean, I think of prep as so not part of the European culture that this is their humorous stab at it? I wonder how the European TFSers see this in relation to how clothing is designed by other designers there - despite the new world audience with the internet and quickly-disseminated information.

I always thought that V&R winked and grinned like mad every time they presented their men's collections because it's such a radically different look and concept from their women's stuff. It's definitely an intentional departure that they've really maintained quite firmly...

well i don't know about eropean culture in relation to prepp, but I think it's all suposed to be ironic/toung and cheek/playfull take on that traditional look. It's been done many tiems befor, but not really by a high fashion designer.

It's like hipsters wearing Penguin polos and golfing pants.

Geek Chic as some said.

It's a continuation of their V&R menswear as it is. I like it though some items seem to be a bit boooring. I'm European and of course we know the preppy looks, England anyone? Boarding schools? Aristocracy? I think we have more heritage than the USA when it comes to this. We shouldn't underestimate the influence of V&R on menswear, just look al McQueen's latest collection, especially the beginning of the show. Gucci is becoming more luxurious and chic and less sexy as well. and so on, and so on. Materials are excellent.

I agree with Alura up to a point: "preppy" may be a distinctly American phenomenon, but in the West, young wealthy conservative people tend to dress similarly everywhere you go. (Or at least they used to, say 20 years ago...these days I think you're more likely to see hip-hop moguls dressed prep-style than actual preppies.)

I think the consistency stems from the fact that their menswear is more an expression of their own personal style; they actually wear "Monsieur" themselves, head to toe, every day....

Hence my asking. Not being part of this particular section of society, I don't know. Although Preppy style in America may not be the same as the boarding school styles of aristocracy in Europe - there are many things that may be specific to Preppy as an American style, which may not be part and parcel of European experience - the khakis, seersuckers, pinks and greens, webbing belts, penny loafers, etc. And I don't know if the influence stems from that (which seems less likely) or from European 'preppy' because I honestly don't know the differences. Geek Chic seems to sum it up perfectly - I DO recall thhat monicker being bandied about, and it does fit.:flower:

right, like droogist also said, V&R monsieur (together with the more sober lines of Hermes and Lanvin Homme) is the epitome of the 'classic' comme-ils-faut european style. Aristocrats and top level businessmen adore dressing like that, its the 'old england' school which is definetly here to stay as a huge trend in menswear..
i like V&R's interprentation, its more 'funky' in a way
i also adore the fact that they design what they wear, its a success point.. imagine to be a menswear designer and not even wearing your clothes, could be pretty ridiculous no? said it before, i'll say it agian, i much prefer their menswear to their womenswear
and for me the 'V&R monsieur' line is also great for girls, i'd love to get my hand on some of their monsieur pieces

(*minus the quite trashy collegean hood/sweater-y looks)

Well at a certain point it starts to tie in of course, but the style of 'well off America' was very much inhereted from the style of European high society playing cricket and golf. A style that could also be seen at the French riviera or during the Colonial times when men started wearing khakis and white in these exotic regions to stay cool. The English brought this style back home from India etc. Of course Hollywood was of major influence after that. Naturally the rich travelled a lot and brought things home from all over the world, I guess the Americans made it more casual and glamourous (Hamptons prove). It was people like Ralph Lauren that made it a typical commercial American style.

excellent explanation of the europe/american issues of preppiness alura :flower:

OMG! I love it, love it, love it! Even the hoodie .. did you see the cut on the pants of that model? It wud make me go into the store saying "This in EVERY color"

not so crazy about it. looks rather bland and mundane to me. which comes as no surprise.
