Isn't that the irony of their collection? Preppy Europeans? I'm actually asking. I mean, I think of prep as so not part of the European culture that this is their humorous stab at it? I wonder how the European TFSers see this in relation to how clothing is designed by other designers there - despite the new world audience with the internet and quickly-disseminated information.sm4ever said:...some a bit too preppy

I always thought that V&R winked and grinned like mad every time they presented their men's collections because it's such a radically different look and concept from their women's stuff. It's definitely an intentional departure that they've really maintained quite firmly...
I agree with Alura up to a point: "preppy" may be a distinctly American phenomenon, but in the West, young wealthy conservative people tend to dress similarly everywhere you go. (Or at least they used to, say 20 years ago...these days I think you're more likely to see hip-hop moguls dressed prep-style than actual preppies.)baklanyc said:Isn't that the irony of their collection? I think the consistency stems from the fact that their menswear is more an expression of their own personal style; they actually wear "Monsieur" themselves, head to toe, every day....I always thought that V&R winked and grinned like mad every time they presented their men's collections because it's such a radically different look and concept from their women's stuff. Hence my asking. Not being part of this particular section of society, I don't know. Although Preppy style in America may not be the same as the boarding school styles of aristocracy in Europe - there are many things that may be specific to Preppy as an American style, which may not be part and parcel of European experience - the khakis, seersuckers, pinks and greens, webbing belts, penny loafers, etc. And I don't know if the influence stems from that (which seems less likely) or from European 'preppy' because I honestly don't know the differences. Geek Chic seems to sum it up perfectly - I DO recall thhat monicker being bandied about, and it does fit.Alura said:Geek Chic as some said.
It's a continuation of their V&R menswear as it is. I like it though some items seem to be a bit boooring. I'm European and of course we know the preppy looks, England anyone? Boarding schools? Aristocracy? I think we have more heritage than the USA when it comes to this.
