Vintage!

I wear vintage dresses, tops, and skirts quite often, and I have a 1950s cone brassiere which I use under dresses from the same era. You NEED a cone bra if you are going to wear a June Cleaver dress. I promise you.

When I bought my pair of girl shoes, I made a point to get soemthing that would go well with my 1940s-60s clothes. As often as I have, I really shouldn't wear combat boots with a 1950s dress.

I own a couple of items from as far back as the 1890s, but they are NOT wearable. In way too delicate of condition. I admire the artistry and styles of these old dresses, however.

I also make myself clothes from styles from the 1930s-1970s, sometimes using vintage patterns, sometimes designing and drafting it from scratch.

I'm very into clean vintage. I'm very, very picky about what I wear. In fact, I have no vintage clothes, but lots of accessories and sunglasses. I am always really tempted by some of the clothes, but never actually buy. I may pick up a floral mini soon. When I found a bell sleeved top that I liked, I coped the design and got my mum's tailor in Dubai to make it for me. I love vintage sunglasses, ones like the Dita Supadupa ones, and lots of designers haven't exactly cottoned onto them yet.

I do shop at thrift stores, but I've only ever bought necklaces and bangles. I bought a really nice crochet cardigan once, but I never wore it.

charlottesometimes, my necklace is not made of jet, it's made from blue beads.

I love vintage because I feel it appeals to the romantic in me in a way, especially the Edwardian/Victorian pieces - clothes/ accessories with a history, story, gives them a special something that clothes bought off the rack lacks.

I guess the male equivalent would be why guys like to mod vintage cars ( they call them hot rods??) - they believe that these cars have souls B)

Of course, for clothes, I do wash them before wearing, especially if I got them while thrifting. But really isn't getting vintage right is a ultimately a challenge to one's sense of style?

A pic of my necklace:

I love all vintage, I woudl wear any decade really, but i would have to be very carefull with the very old things. I get anoyed with the exesive mrk up of alot of vinatge stores, but you can find amazing deals as well. I always wash pieces befor wearing them.

chiangsi1980, it's a beautiful necklace! It's a shame that you don't like to wear it. Maybe you could have it restrung??????

charlotte, its YOU glad to see you around

Hi Lena!! Great to see you.:flower:

I have frequent moods where I go out and troll vintage shops in the hopes of finding fabulous clothes, but always walk out with only jewellery or a handbag.

I've been on constant lookout for a nice brocade jacket, but can't seem to find any that aren't falling apart at the seams...

. What bums me out the most is now that thrift stores are figuring out they can make more money off the "look," a lot of them are raising their prices out of the price range for some people. My friend was upset when she observed the people running the store refusing to lower the price of a wheelchair for a man who desperately needed a new one and really only had $35. Ahh, but that's a whole other discussion. (sorry if that was too off topic.)

this is such a sad thing; the gentrification of thrift.

luckily you can still find resale stores with good prices in the san francisco bay area. there is a thrift shop that has great stuff and has two dollar tuesdays! i got a wonderful vintage coat there, and a great pink plaid skirt that is fitted until just above the knee and then it gently flutes out to mid-calf - all this several years ago, before either pink or that style of skirt was in. i'll never forget the day i scored on a bunch of old-fashioned petticoats - and i don't usually get that kind of thing either, but these were really fabulous.

yes, wash everything! i do believe in clothing retaining some essence of the wearer, if just chemical. superstitious or not, i won't wear even my own clothes if i have had a bad experience in them until the piece is cleaned - so thriftr shopping is an experience in using your intuition and seeing not only what looks good on you but what feels good on you.

I am thinking of that, the necklace is even more beautiful in real life.
The beads actually have a teal, grayish-green tint to it and I don't feel anything "wrong" with it (Yup, I am still somewhat supersitious in that sense.)

So far, I have picked up mostly vintage jewellery pieces. The only piece of vintage clothing which I have is a dress. I am still on the look out for beautiful Edwardian pieces, something about the era is just so romantic! But it's hard to find something in good condition and not look too "costumey". Double tough when you think about how old these clothes are suppose to be.

The 1920's dresses I have, I try to only wear once a year, if that. Most I have only worn once or twice. I am lucky to have learned through trial and error what fabrics hold up the best over time.

I'll wear most anything, as long as it doesn't seem to have a chance of falling apart on me after one wear!

Most of the vintage things I have are dresses, and the best decades for dresses seem to be the 20s, 50s, and 60s so that's when mine are all from, or look like they are from.

Eek!

I definitely do this w/thrift clothing and furniture (if any bad vibes, won't get it). But I don't recall thinking about my own clothing in this manner. Actually, whether weird fourth dimensional stuff is included or not, you could make a case for the subtle chemical effect creating a scent pattern.. like anger on a jacket cuff, whatever. Easy to dismiss until one thinks about how very good tracking dogs are at what they do, I would guess!

I saw your beautiful wedding pictures in the "Introduce yourself" thread. I hope you don't mind if I post one of them in this thread. I would love for everyone to see your vintage wedding dress.

Wow what a gorgeous dress!

I love wearing dresses from the 50's, I have a nice collection of very "Stepford Wives" dresses. I also love dresses from the 70's and a lot of the tops and blouses. A lot of the ones I have are very breezy and light and loose. Although a lot of the dresses I have, I get them taken up a bit since they're all too long for me (but then again I am short)

I love vintage jewelry the most because it's unique and has character. I have tons of vintage necklaces/bracelets but I am never sure of their age. Some are signed and some aren't. One of the most interesting bracelets I have is this one with a carved message in it during the post World War 2 era. (1948) I have no idea what it says, I believe it's in Hungarian though because I purchased it in Hungary.

I think the fact that vintage clothing DOES have history behind it makes it more special/unique though.

I dont really own that much vintage clothes its mostly assesories its not that i wouldnt wear it i just dont have much i just rid of a load of i items that seemed great at the time but i never got around to wearing it.I wouldnt wear vintage underwear or shoes for personal preferences but i may be able to come around to the idea of shoes but never underwear ew !! :( I own mostly vintage patterns so i can have vintage with out the having to rumage through loads of stuff. Not too sure.....

That is a beautiful wedding dress rhiannon.. and you are a beautiful bride!

For vintage, so far I have only been buying dresses and accessories and most of my dresses comes from the 50s-70s.
I would like to buy an Edwardian dress but they are hard to come by due to their age and I think hard to wear since most of them are rather sheer and you need to invest in slips, petticoats etc for the sake of modesty....
