There are some lovely bags in here. I especially love the magazine clutches. I had my eye on one with Goldie Hawn on the cover myself (on ebay), but my computer snapped when I was going to bid on it, and then the auction was over.:(

That happened soooooooooooooo often to me too!!!!!!

There are some nice places in Liverpool - I forget the name of the place but inside there are literally 20 vintage shops / stalls. Seriously it is great. You go the Lime Street (train station) and as you stand outside it (with your back to the station facing St Georges Hall) you take a right and walk for 5 mins and the place is on your left (I think it is called the something palace). Seriously you will love it. I am sorry I have forgotten the name of it but I am sure if you ask people when you are nearby they will assist.

Dying crochet thread for vintage bag?

Hi everyone.
I just bought this really amazing vintage crochet bag from the 20's. The thing is it did not have a wrist strap but I thought... no big deal Ill crochet one. Well it is turning out to be a bigger deal then I thought because the bag is navy with a little gold. I thought I maybe wouldnt be able to find the gold but no prob there. The problem is the navy... it is so dark it is almost black. If you put the navy crochet thread up to the bag the bag looks black & with black it looks navy so it is deffinately an in between & I cant find it anywhere. The crochet thread that Im probably going to get is by Aunt Lydia & it is 100% cotton & cotton blends... no acrylic so it is dyeable. So now how do I do this? Do I get the navy thread & black dye & water it down or something or do I use a navy (or they had midnight navy) to dye the navy thread? Do I get a different color thread to start like white? HELP! lol. I love this bag so much & want to make it nice. I was really hoping to do a thin bit of gold on either side & mostly navy in the center. I could do all gold but I dont think that would look that good since there is very little gold on the bag. Anyways... thanks SO much in advance for your help. :flower:

Hi again.
One more quick question...
Would I maybe need to mix some black with navy dye to get the dye dark enough to begin with?
Thanks again.

Aunt Lydia crochet thread comes in colors--have you seen these? I bought a denim shade--I think they had two different types of denim, both dark and light, and I'm quite sure they had navy and black as well.

As long as you've got 100% cotton thread, you should be able to dye it. I guess you'd have to measure your proportions if mixing blue and black and test it on small sample pieces of thread as you add one color or another plus time it to get the right shade. You've got to let the thread dry, though, because it'll lighten up as it dries.

If you find a color you like, I think I'd try to unwind the entire ball, keeping it neat (good luck with that!) and put it in the dye vat. If you try to stick the ball in (cardboard and all), the color probably won't take evenly.

I know many knitters dye with Kool-Aid. It's supposed to be pretty simple and fun. You can google this and probably come up with complete instructions (sorry, I don't have time to do the search for you right now).

Another thought is that you could check out the home decor/trim sections of local or online fabric stores and see if you can find some lovely cording and tassels that match. Then you'd just have to sew them in somehow or add grommets and slip the cord through.
HTH,
Amy

Thank you.
I did check all of Lydia's crochet thread & this bag is just way to dark a navy... as close as you can get without being black. When you put it next to black then it is really obvious its not black. Its so crazy I didnt think it would be this hard. I think Im going to try the dye thing before I would go to my last resort of making the whole strap gold. The Kool Aid thing wouldnt work because I dont know how Id get it that dark... I wish though because I really love the non chemical alternative.

Do you think Id be able to crochet the strap (its only an inch wide & maybe 12 inches long) & dye that (after testing color of course)? Or should I just unwind & dye to be safe? Also would I want to start with white yarn rather than using navy & trying to darken it?

Thanks again for your help. :flower:

most of my experience is dying garments...

i would try using navy and dying it black...
the longer you leave it in the dye the darker it becomes...

*imo- the risk you take with dying it after you make the handle is that there could be some shrinkage with the very hot water you use to dye...and so you might want to dye the thread first...
but i have never found that anything shrinks very much...

maybe just make a gold handle...
how would that look?...
:flower:

Thanks for all your help.
Im thinking Ill try making the gold handle first. It might look ok since there is a tiny bit of gold right near the top of the bag. If its unbearable lol... Ill try the dye thing but Im thinking if it isnt so bad I probably shouldnt go to all the trouble.
